Dig inside, set up initial stockpiles to get everything inside, and if there's water or soil get some farms/stills up and running pronto. ;D
Oh, and if you can, dig into the first cavern if there's ground for stuff to grow on, for an indoor pasture.
Well we might encounter hostile things. We have a rudimentary military, but I doubt they can fend off a horde of troglodytes or crundles.
I meant just quickly dig a tunnel into it, preferably from above, then seal it up again to let underground plants grow, if we have water available to make mud. That is, unless you want to attempt to capture and tame the inhabitants of the caverns (silk farms, anyone?)
That might be a good idea (the pasture, not the silk farm, at least not yet). And we can save our alpacas from the inevitable lava flood, most likely from the dwarf head.

You require water to make farms underground?

We're talking about growing cave vegetation on stone if there isn't dirt available. The moss or whatever else would be for an underground pasture.

Plans for a dwarven face have been bandied about. Does anyone actually have some sort of idea of what a dwarven face would look like in blocked form?

Yeah, I do. I don't know how to make squares so, I'd say about 5 on the bottom 2 each 5 away from each other on the level above, and continuing till you decide to curve it back in wards bad go from there?

Probably......blocky? :P

But I was thinking, do we have a goal for Bloodhole?

Man, people reply quick on this, the mod I was refering to forever ago was my dwarven voices mod, you just drag and drop the raws into the positions section of the dwarf entity, and because positions are checked every time you re-open and re-load the game, you can add it in at any time, you just set every dwarf into the "dwarf" position, and named dwarves into the "named dwarf" position, so that people who have been dwarfed are more dynamic and interesting.
The link is in my sig.

Also, +1 for the dwarf face barfing lava.
As for the look, I guess like this?
    ◘◘◘
   ◘◘◘◘◘
   ◘ ◘ ◘
   ◘◘◘◘◘
    ◘ ◘
    ◘◘

♠♣♠♣♠♣♠

...man, that looks bad...

First things First.

  • Dig Entryway into cliff-face and stockpile area
  • Dig area for some workshops
  • Build carpenter workshop and some beds
  • Dig out some stone for mason and some chairs/tables and doors

Do we have access to any soil?  Or do we need to make some buckets to muddy up some stone for farms?

Once we have stocks and some room, I say slaughter those useless yak bulls.  I've got a hankerin' for some yak eye roasts in the near future.

Well, we'll need buckets anyway for dumping water on the volcano to make a solid floor, so we might as well get started on that.

I say slaughter those useless yak bulls.
They aren't useless, you can get wool from them! They are very useful until you can get silk farms up.

@ 3 wide entrance in side of mountain: can a caravan path up there from edge of map?

+1 Magma mouth dwarf face

How about a way to dump water out of his nose?

Also, a couple training weapons to get military started once migrants arrive.

Last I checked yak's weren't shearable  ???

I thought that was what the alpaca's were for anyway, that and to scare away any thieves with their mighty wooliness.

There's a little soil to the north, but it's a bit...north of where you guys are.

I think I'll make all the named dwarves Named Dwarves when we can actually give everyone rooms.

Finally, before I start work on a dwarven face I need an idea of what you guys want...let's start simple. How big will the dwarven face be?
