That isn't really what I had in mind. I was wondering if anyone knows specifically how to alleviate the really nasty framerate hit you take when visiting a fortress in adventure mode. I heard that sleeping in the fortress is very bad, due to some kind of bug, and was wondering if there were other known bugs that I could avoid to make things less slow. I suppose I could try running some of the DFHack cleaning commands, but I don't know how much that will help. I always have FPS drop terribly whenever I visit a fortress, even if it's pretty clean. I suspect it has something to do with all the critters underground moving around, but I'm not really sure. I suppose I could use reveal, kill all the underground things with magma/obsidian, and then unreveal, and see if that makes things better...
That being said, I did do some more adventuring in the fort, culminating with my dwarf being crippled when a disembodied head bit hit foot to pieces:
15th Granite, 13. Started human adventurer Bale Gusticar in hamlet Omspecut. Walked to town Kortilshene, but found it almost empty. The world must be too young to have populated cities. Given that there is no gear available, I will retire this adventurer and start as a dwarf, and hope to find gear in the fort itself. I've heard that zombies are great for training...
28th Granite, 13. Reg Razorgleam starts in Pestratcasser. He has a steel battle axe and a bismuth bronze shield. It's a good start. Did some hunting in the nearby wilderness. Killed a buzzard, a kingsnaked, and a two-humped camel. I returned to Pestratcasser and asked about missions I could to for training. They told me of a nearby cave inhabited by both troglodytes and kobold theives. I set out towards it, but was ambushed by kobolds on the way.
I hacked the first kobold swordsman in the chest, and then both arms, rendering him helpless. I then practiced beating him with the flat of my axe until he bled to death. I took his silver short sword and copper shield. I then cut off a second kobolds foot and sword hand, and bead him in the head with the flat of my axe until he was dead. I took from him an iron shield and another silver short sword. By the time I finished dispatching the kobolds it was getting dark, so I went back to town, and spent the night in the hovel next to the well. I replaced my bronze shield with the iron one I took from the kobolds, and left the villiagers with the rest of the kobolds' equipment.
1st Slate. I made my way to the cave, and found several unarmed kobolds at the entrance. The poor bastards decided to attack me en masse, so I was forced to slaughter all nine of them. I tried to make their deaths as quick and painless as possible. After all, technially I was invading their home, such as it was. Even if they were dirty theiving brigands. I took an ostrich bone bracelet that I found nearby which must have belonged to the kobolds. I found two more kobolds lurking on top of a hill overlooking the area where I had killed the others, and dispatched them as well. After extensive searching, I was not able to find a way inside the cave, so I gave up and continued onward.
The humans had also reported that there was a leopard in a nearby cave, further north and a bit west. I found the cave just before nightfall. I first hacked the leopard in the chest, and then cut off its right rear leg. I then continued to hack at its extremeties until I got a clear shot at its head, and then put it out of its misery. It seemed the humans at overexaggerated its danger, as I found no bodies in its cave, but at least I now had some nice leopard meat to eat. I spent the night in the leopard's cave.
2nd Slate. I left before dawn, for another try at finding the troglodyte's cave. I recognized some landmarks that the humans had described, and made my way quietly eastward. On my way, I came across a group of keas. I, like all dwarves, had a deep hatred of keas, and I managed to kill 4 of them before the rest took to the air.
I finally found the troglodyte's cave and crept inside. I threw my copper dagger at her, but missed. I then charged at her, and sliced open her stomach and left arm, before cutting off her head. I returned to Shatarono to report my success, but I was unable to get the humans to tell me the location of any more lairs nearby. I returned to the troglodyte's cave, and would spend the night there before continuing on to Umomudar. I arrived with a significant amount of daylight remaining, so I decided to do some hunting and killed three mountain goats. I would stock the cave with their meat, and it would serve as a staging area for my assault on Umomudar. I was still not tired enough for sleep, so I went out again and killed a wolverine and a hoary marmot, and added their meat to my supplies. I then went to sleep in the cave.
3rd Slate. I left for Umomudar before dawn. I journeyed quickly through the foul lands, hoping not to find anything not quite living. I arrived at the fortress without incident. I found a lower arm crawling about, and I hacked at it until it collapsed. I put it in my backpack, but it came to life again and dropped to the ground. I killed it again and stuffed it and a dwarven skeleton into a barrel. We'll see if that holds them. Probably not. I found a pig skeleton, and quickly butchered it before it could come to life. I threw bones at a dwarven zombie until it collaped, and then threw the temporarily lifeless skeleton at a donkey skeleton, smashing it. I butchered the donkey skeleton, but While I was putting the two nearby dwarven corpses in a barrel, the donkey's hair came to life. I killed it again, and placed it in a barrel.
I then found a group of three dwarven survivors. I had little hope for them, but I would try to protect them. I killed and butchered an alpaca skeleton that was attacking them, and then threw its bones at a water buffalo skeleton, collapsing it. I then butchered the water buffalo, a yak bull, a dog, and a cat, and threw all of their remains in the ocean. I found a fourth living dwarf sitting on the beach, looking hopeless and miserable. I tried to get him to follow me to safety, but he was inconsolable.
I butchered several more animal corpses on the beach and threw them in the ocean. As I was heading back to check on the other survivors when Ingish Bomrekurvand's head latched onto my leg with its teetch. I hacked furiously at it with my axe, and eventually smashed it off me and threw it as well into the ocean. I then found the leader of the ill-fated dwarven expedition, sitting on the beach, fidgeting and muttering to himself. I asked him what I could do, and he said he didn't need any help. Clearly he had gone insane.
I again headed back towards the other survivors, and found another animated dwarven head. I smashed it with the flat of my axe. I found the survivors to be mostly OK (or at least not currently under attack), so I continued searching the site.
I collected a couple of dwarven corpses, and made towards the beach to dump them. On the way, one of them came to life, and I cut off its head to strike it down. Then the head came to life as I reached the beach, and latched on to my foot with its teeth. I was unable to detach it for quite some time, and it severely injured my foot before I was able to smash it off. I threw all the corpse parts into the ocean, and then crawled off into the woods.
I painfully limped all the way back to my cave. It was well after dark when I arrived, and for some reason a peregrine falcon had taken refuge in my cave, and attacked me as I entered. I quickly dispatched it with my axe. I then went to sleep, hoping my foot would heal cleanly.
4th Slate. In the morning I found myself still unable to stand, so I ate some of my large stash of food and drank the falcon's blood, and went back to sleep again. It seemed sleep alone would not cure my foot. I would have to try to make my way back to civilization. I journeyed back to the human villiage, and retired there for a while. Even after returning from retirement, my foot was still injured. I returned to my cave one last time, and deposited my fine axe and shield there. I could no longer wield them with my foot so badly injured, so I retured permanently in the human villiage. I hoped that another hero would soon arise to take up my quest.
I might try again with another adventurer later this week if I have time.
