"Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration
« on: February 28, 2013, 09:34:38 pm »

I just got a computer with Windows 8 and the internet has worked fine until now. Whenever I diagnose the problem, it says:
"Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration

HELP!

Do a handstand while holding your breath, then report back to us.

Well first tell us what is happening that caused you to have to diagnose it? What is it doing? I don't know anything about internet connection stuff. But still report back. Also if you can get online in another place then search the error. Look for troubleshooting help. I'm sure others here are good wth this stuff.

Also, how long did you do the handstand for? You might need to hold it for longer.

I have looked for the past 5 hours, and tried fixes myself. It is simply not gaining any internet access. It is connected to the router, but not letting me use the internet. If that makes any sense...

I have reset the router, and it didn't do anything. I have Windows 8. This is my first time trying to connect to this network with THIS computer. I haven't contacted my ISP yet, though.

Open your network and sharing center, go to change adapter settings, right click on your ethernet, hit properties, choose Internet Protocol V4, then tell me what you see.
It might not be the same on your computer, since I'm on seven, but it may work.

It has DHCP enabled, and I have tried setting a static IPv4 etc. It didn't work for me.
I has it set on "Obtain --- address automatically" On Network Connections it has a status of "Identifying..." constantly.

Also obtaining the DNS automatically?

Yes. I have no idea what is wrong with it.

Odd. Check the connection on the ethernet wires, and all that.

All of them are 100% secure. I have read many threads online, and a lot of people have the same problem, but there's is "Local Area Network" whilst mine is "Ethernet"

depending on what your service provider is, occasionally they only allow so many computers per household.  Seriously, call your ISP please.  Or at least tell us who it is, what your household situation is.
