Musical sketches
« on: February 28, 2013, 10:03:30 am »

Evenin' chaps

I've started doing a musical sketch a day. What I mean by this is writing a song away from the instrument, usually around 8 or 16 bars long just to develop myself a bit further musically without relying on the instrument as often. When I have 12 or so of them, I'm going to re-record them and release it as a mini-album kind of thing. At the moment all of the sketches are quickly recorded and played, more care will be taken when I'm redoing them

Here's two so far,

*Sketch 1* (has a weird woodland vibe to it)

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2872916/Sketch%201.mp3

*Sketch 2* (pseudo-eastern european let's all dance around a cock-fight)

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2872916/sketch%202.mp3

*Sketch 3* (This one sounds mega gay.)

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2872916/Sketch%203.mp3

*sketch 4* (Bit cheesy and classical-ish)

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2872916/sketch4%20-%20Copy.mp3

*sketch 5* (Solo acoustic guitar throughout)

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2872916/Sketch%205.mp3

Apologies if there are delays between posts, the actual writing doesn't take so long, it's the damn recording part which is a hassle to do D:<

So here's the manuscripts for the sketches. Unfortunately sketch#1 is across a few pages, not because it's long, just because it took  me a while to notate the intro properly. I can't really photograph it without it spanning 3 pages.

Spoiler: sketch#2 (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: sketch#3 (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: sketch#4 (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: sketch#5 (click to show/hide)

As you can see, lots of sketches are already done, I just haven't gotten around to recording them...

Edit: Holy cheeseballs those pictures are HUGE, how do I resize them?
Note: the manuscript for the recording 'sketch 4' is the image called 'sketch5'.

I really like them, especially number three. The recording quality is very high as well, what are you using to record? Do you do music besides these for anything (other than Kaboom Audio)?

Here and there, I have a shit ton of music just dolloped all over the place.

The recording chain for these sketches was

Taylor 114 acoustic > Audio technica AT4040 microphone > profire 2626 interface > Reaper DAW and mixed on KRK rp5 monitors and Audio Technica m50 headphones.

No fancy plugins, just the stock ones with reaper and a freeware impulse loader.

By the way it is soooo much easier to get a good sound with a decent instrument, you would not believe the time it saves.

And here, I'll just lather you in my songs TAKE THEM ALL

Very nice work on the rest of your songs. I play a bit of guitar (I'm nowhere near as good as you thought, I'm only classically trained in music theory and drumming, haha) and it'd be really cool if you could upload the sheet music/tabs for some of these. I can definitely hear the inspiration from/similarities to the DF background music.

I've just uploaded the manuscripts, the images are HUGE, but I'm not sure how to fix that  :-[
Also my notation isn't great sometimes lawlz, since I only write for myself I don't follow the best practices when it comes to writing conventionally.

Thanks for uploading them, I'll probably get around to learning one or two of them at some point.

Not quite sure, it'll be something to help me practice learning from sheet music. If I were to pick one now it would probably be #3.

Sketch number 5 is up!
Dynamics wise it's all over the place because I wanted a really delicate intro. If I were to flesh it out I think i'd probably introduce some strings or maybe a deep bass synth drone and weird electronic elements, but for now, this is what I have

I bet Omegastick could help with that last part. Some of his stuff is pretty good.

I understand so much! With the stop and start flow-breaking...

Also these are all really good. My favorite is number 2 :)
Keep it up, man!

Yep, so many stops and starts. Especially when you make a mistake right at the end and then start again, I used to just start a few bars before the mistake and just re-record that section, but now I'm being more strict on myself and play the songs all the way through without any copying and pasting.

Glad people are enjoying these :D

I've actually recorded all the ones I had so I guess I need to get busy and start writing some more

@MaximumZero

I could do that sort of thing on my own however having an outside ear would probably do some good. Besides, I'm all for collaborating
