Anyone remebers Settlers III?
« on: February 27, 2013, 09:07:30 am »

Several minutes ago while checking my older games i came across my Settlers III Gold edition.
I installed it out of pure nostalgia... and asked myself the question i used to ask way back in 1998...

What's the freaking difference between Spearmen and Swordsmen.

The obvious answer would be "spearmen are better against mounted units" but there are none in S3 (unless you count donkeys that can't be attacked anyway).
In fact i passed the entire campaign by using only swordsmen and bowmen at a 1 to 2 ratio (and setting the spear production down to 0 at every armory).

I decided to look for some info on those mysterious polearm armed warriors and all i got was some talk about them being stronger at the price of slower movement (and weaker against archers due to being slower).
It looked legit but they seem to move just as fast as swordsmen in my game and the archers themselves are the slowest unit.

Anyone knows something about those guys i don't?

Didn't they have a longer attack reach but a slower attack speed. Meaning that they would attack sooner with no counter but if they got close they died faster...

I remember Serf City (aka the first Settlers game). It had multiplayer... if you had a serial port mouse for the second player so you could to play split-screen.

(I had one, but that feature never seemed to work properly. Oh well!)

I had that on an old Amiga, it was my favourite game ever, the noise the prospectors made while hunting for materials was the best.

Well i have Settlers 2 (gold) and i noticed the possibility to play it split screen with 2 mice...

However if i even had a second mouse working with it i doubt i had anyone to play it with on hand.
Especially since S1 and S2 is sooooo darn slow. At least S3 has the time compressing button.

As for the spearmen... i guess i'll have to spam them for a bit and see if they can attack from 2 rows at once (unlike swordsmen who can only attack from 1).
If they do then spearmen might be a good counter against swordsmen... but i think i'd notice it when playing against the AI in the campaigns.

In Settlers 2 you can press V to double the game speed, but no worry the default game speed being extremely slow, the game still stay slow paced even at double speed.

I used to love it on the Amiga, and also ran it split screen with my brother a couple of times. We would just build and expand for what seemed like forever.

I guessed the copy protection symbols once because I couldn't find the book. Utter madness.

I played a lot of settlers II (the best imho, then maybe the V) and Knight and Merchants (game with somewhat the same gameplay).
It's a relaxing strategy game, I think it would fit very well on tablet with the touch screen.
If you liked Settlers II, their is a free "remake" called Widelands that worth checking.

@Sonlirain
Spearman are slower but attack stronger than swordman, so VS and archer the sword win (speed) but spear vs sword, the spear do more damage and win. Look the swordman being your cavaleryish.

So this would make spearmen a far better unit to garrison towers/castles with.
If that's the case then why the game uses a swordsman by default?

Anyway yeah it makes sense spears would do more damage being a two handed piercing weapon and all.
Thank you for the imput.

I remember it fondly, it's a lot like DF anyways.

Same, loved the prospectors.

I remember accidentally leaving it running while going out for dinner and coming back to find myself completely surrounded by the computer opponents but all my defenders in the watchtowers were upgraded to knights so it was quite easy to take back the map.

Settlers III was a big letdown for me after the brilliant second part, but not quite as big as my disappointment over the direction the series went in afterwards.

I can't remember whether it was Settlers 2 or 3 that I played/enjoyed most, but I remember thoroughly enjoying at least one of the series back in the hey-day of the Amiga.  Had a friend that despite agreeing to play peacefully, essentially co-op vs the AI, still always insisted on attacking me if I got a really good prospecting patch that he "needed" :p

I read that they've (finally) mostly removed the always-online DRM from Settlers 7 (DLC content won't work without a connection, but vanilla game is apparently working offline), so I might check that out - seems to get decent enough reviews, barring the DRM part.

I on the other hand love Settlers 3 (and 4 to an extent).
Sure the game underwent a massive overhaul but i liked most of the changes like working areas for buildings and... the removal of flags.
Sure the flag system was a nice thing to fiddle with trying to find the perfect balance of distance and # of helpers but i found it to be a bother.
Since S3 if a building needs 8 units of various materials to build then 8 haulers will grab whatever is needed and go there instead of playing relay with them for 13 minutes while the builder faceplams.
Same thing with the army.
Want to send 3 people against that tower? Go for it.
Want to send 300? No problemo!

Just saw this
There's also

and

I vaguely remember playing one of the games (it was Settlers 3 judging by the box art), but I don't remember whether I liked it or not. In any case, just thought I'd give you guys a heads up in case you were interested in trying it...
