What would you call this?
« on: February 26, 2013, 06:54:06 pm »

So you know how you can like hear a song in your head. But even in dead silence like the song isn't actually playing. You also could have heard it a while back. Then you can quickly see something in your eyes but it isn't actually physically in front of you. But you may have seen something similar to it before. So is there a scientific term for it and what is actually happening? Can you do this? Can't everyone? Its interesting. I'm gonna look this up now. But I still want to hear your thoughts on this.

EDIT: Please don't say I'm hallucinating or crazy. "Maybe you should see a therapist",etc. You know when you hear a song or see something not there on purpose.

I believe this is called your imagination. Part of using it is the ability to recall past experiences in the manner described.

Long-Term Audiatory Memory.
So seeing something instead would be Long-Term Visual Memory. Correct? Can't everyone do this.

You are hallucinating. A hallucination is nothing more than a sensory perception not backed by valid sensory data.

I knew someone would be technical about it and say something like this.

EDIT: Also I looked it up and afaik everyone can do it but some people are better or worse with it.

It isn't technical. It is what is going on. It is not my fault if you attach unwarranted stigma to words.

Thats really the only word I could think of. I meant someone would say something like that. Since that really is hallucinating. But I went it as if I have some disease or having been eating the wrong plump helmets.

Its a hallucination. You're probably fine and don't have a disease. Don't do drugs. See a doctor if it gets worse.  ::)

If the ephemeral image you described is triggered by a sound (as you seem to have implied) than that's called Synesthesia.

IIRC though (but I'm not sure) synesthesia usually requires an actual sound as a trigger rather than a memory of one

EDIT:
If the secondary sensation can be triggered by a thought or memory then it is Ideasthesia

Hallucinations aren't exactly the worst thing around, anyway. I have the occasional auditory hallucination, most people do I'm sure.

Little things like that aren't signs of insanity, nor are they particularly abnormal. Just enjoy it. I don't hallucinate, but I have at least one incredibly vivid period of deja vu per week, lasting anywhere from thirty seconds to ten minutes. It's actually sort of cool when it isn't driving me to distraction trying to determine if the memories are real or fabricated.
