So ugh, where's the save? The zip in the first post is from yesterday, and it has "permission denied" error too.

Okay, I got everything, it's hard to fix the stuff with just 5 people, but we should be okay (those outside didn't make it inside).

Wow Vayaviya Vayu, you made almost everyone a widower, we only have one married pair :D.  But okay, I'll try to make this fort live, although it's really hard (you have no food/drinks whatsoever).

The end of the first year, logs of underseer Deona

Date: ?? of ??, ??
So I've managed to survive that terrible slaughter that happened. My god, what a mess, I still hear their screams in my ears! Our underseer gave his life fighting for our survival, so no matter what he did wrong, let's not tell anything bad about the dead.
 Rest in peace.

Now I am picked to lead this community, if you can call a few frightened people and a child a community.
I've reordered current tasks, so now we can at least do something. We quickly finished the outside wall, patching the holes which were left, and installed a door to prevent animals from wandering in.
Two robots we have do not answer our pipboy commands, they must have been disabled by a sandstorm or fell in some crevice.

So we now have me as our leader and a miner apparently, two farmers, a mason, a scavenger/carpenter and a child.

Deona

Mr. Happyface

Disarcade

Tom

Demonbutter

 Deona - miner, underseer/manager/broker/librarian
 Disarcade - farmer, security chief
 Tom - farmer
 Mr. Happyface - scavenger/carpenter/woodcutter with a dog
 Demonbutter - mason/crafter

One of the farmers called Disarcade is really sad about his wife's death, he is screaming and tearing, so I had to give him a position of "security chief" and promise that he gets a gun whenever we manage to find or make one.
I don't think it's a good idea to give a gun to a psycho, but the promise calmed him down a bit, we really need every man we can use here to survive.
Demonbutter is also very sad that his wife died, but he decided to stop being a cheesemaker and become something useful and continue to live. He's our resident mason and crafter now, fixing these walls and working on doors to make us safer and don't let anyone die again.

It looks like our "security chief" is serious about looking after us, he keeps patrolling the gate when he's not gathering plants and there's that look in his eyes. It's not madness, it's dedication. He gives himself fully to protect our group, I think we can trust him.
I've ordered to make him an office next to mine, I drilled the room with my own hands. Also everyone gets a free bedroom, but our only survived married pair decide to live in one room. Understandable.

People tell me they keep hearing screams and cries of the dead citizens. We have to do something... I've ordered to bury those remains we can gather, but there's barely anything left of them.
 Now the complaints have stopped.

But I think I've seen a silouette on the horison, it looks like... No, it cannot be, it must be my eyes playing tricks on me.

The previously dug diner is still open. We don't have many tables, but at least we have a place to sit down and eat.

Date: ?? of ??, ??
The winter entombs us, and I don't know how we are going to survive with such a small amount of food and drinks. I started rationing harshly.

Date: ?? of ??, ??
What is it, a trailer? We were not abandoned, they found us!

... Apparently it's just a trade caravan and they don't want to escort us to anywhere safe, they already have trouble fighting off local wildlife and more people would make it more dangerous. Especially in our situation, where we all are dehydrated and starving.
But we traded various stuff Mr. Happyface managed to scavenge to get some combat armor, helmets and food. Now we can survive the winter.

I've ordered to expand farms, both aboveground and underground, and we now have a kitchen.

By the way, Mr. Happyface's puppy grew up, it is now a dog!

Fortress stats at winter of 1st year.

I think I am saving it. Now I just need migrants.
Disarcade is mostly a farmer for now, but I will make him a gunner soon, once we get people.
Then I will find a man with good stats and training skills to make a security chief, and call him "Big James B".

We still have a nameless child, anyone want to claim the only child survivor?

In front of you is a journal. The cover is made of pressed leather, with a stylized image of a Mr. Handy robot pressed into it. The journal is aged and tattered, but seems to be well taken care of. As you open it, the pages are stained with oil and an unidentifiable brown liquid. The whole thing smells like a machine.

"I still cannot believe this, journal. It feels like moments ago, I was talking to her. She is gone. How can this world exist, with her gone? The last few days have been... dark. I don't remember much, but if my knuckles are to be believed, I must have punched a wall. And if Deona is to believe, I punched somebody else here. But they won't tell me whom. I think they don't want to weigh on my conscience. How low have I fallen...

She always told me I should journal. This book, it was a gift from her. And now that she is gone, I have to do so. I couldn't bear to look at the journal otherwise... or get rid of it. Just the thought stings my eyes. The world is colourless, but I must go on. For her memory, for myself, and for the brave souls around me.

That's it for now, I must go speak to Deona. She has taken over in a time of crisis, and promises to get us through this. We will see."

...

"It has been a month. We endure. I endure. So many of us have felt loss, who else will we lose? I cannot allow this.
I spoke to Deona some time ago, and again recently. She told me that we need somebody to work the land. That I am strong enough to do so, and the future depends on my labour. I simply told her I want a gun. She looked at me oddly, but after I repeated my request a few times she made me the Security Chief. But apparently we don't have guns. Damnit, she just did that to get me out of her office. But I like this title, what it means. What it can mean.

The memories hurt, like a brand. I don't know if I ever will heal. So I will take this pain, and find strength. I will shield others from it."

...

"I am back from the patrol. I don't think anyone expected me to take my work seriously. Especially not Deona. I don't care, this community is now under my protection. I will walk the perimeter until I cannot, and I will tear intruders with my bare arms if need be.
I would, however, like a gun. I wonder if I can get me a bismuthinite one...

I miss her."

[EDIT: Could I see the relationship page for my dwarf? Also, might add some -Engravings- later]

I expect that the (soon-to-be-owned) gun is named after his late wife; from the sounds of this fiction there can be no alternative.

CognitiveDissonance, Big James B, let's solve the noble situation in advance :D.

As far as I understand, CD wanted a ranger, and BJB wanted Security Chief. It so happened that there's no people to make everyone happy, so once BJB turns up, is it okay that CD gives up his position of the security chief to become a leader of a ranger squad?

Works for me. Would much rather be on the front lines.
...by ranger, are you talking about a ranged soldier, or a hunter? Because I want the soldier bit.

I won't ever assign hunters. I don't want to sacrifice people for nothing :P.

Security Chief commands security officers under him, they are meant to patrol the settlement. Ranger captain commands rangers, they are supposed to hunt down dangerous wildlife and meet enemy patrols.

Thoughts:

We finally found your wife's corpse so you are unhappy again (you were content for a while). At least she is buried now.

Relationships:

You came with your wife who is now dead and lies down under settlement in a crypt.

Here's the child, it's a 5 year old girl with long hair and green eyes:

Both of her parents are dead, I hope she survives this madness and pays the world back.

P.S. Heh, I've just noticed that Deona is 59. It looks like this fort is going to be her grave in any case. More reason to struggle to protect it.

Mid-spring of the 2nd year

Logs of Underseer Deona.

We continue to bury our dead. Demonbutter has to work really hard to make enough coffins, and every morning we find another corpse outside.
By the way, we've found one of caravan guards dead under a tree near a pond. His head is caved in, unlucky fellow. We now have his weapons and combat armor though.

==

This morning Disarcade paraded out of our armory full clad in combat armor and with a bayonet in hand. When I asked him why did he dress like this and what is the bayonet for, he answered "to plow the fields". Oh well, I guess he feels safer standing like this near our door. It looks like the wildlife lost interest to our hideout, but you never know what may wander close.

==

Today Mr. Happyface's dog's barking drew our attention to an unknown visitor. He tried to pull one of the crates we discovered away, and the dog spooked him so he ran. As he was running away another figure joined him, it looks like he had a friend. They were both wearing old military uniform, so it looks like we are not the only group near here, but now I am glad Disarcade has that armor on, he will guard the entrance at night from now on. We also tied our glowing iguana next to the door as a lantern and a guard animal.

===

It was good idea to set up a guard. Disarcade discovered another visitor, and this time it was a supermutant, one of those hulking monsters I've read about! It did not want to fight and decided to casually walk away, while Mr. Happyface's dog ran and jumped around it, barking and growling. I was afraid it would kill our dog, but it did not care. So supermutants, hmm...

=====

This morning a big group of tired, battered people showed up. They told us that their vault is destroyed, some people in black power armor cracked their door opened and killed almost everyone, only those who managed to escape through ventilation system made it out, so now they need a home.

We have 34 new people who joined our community, gentlemen... We should have enough food for a while, but we will make them work. If they want to live there, they should fully dedicate themselves to it. And tomorrow I will order to start drafting security force.

So yeah, 40 popuation now. Now we have a chance. I will play more in the evening and start a military, and we need a hospital.

I am expanding courtyard and I've constructed concrete factory, so expect to see some concrete aboveground structures soon.

I've found our possible permanent security chief, Big James B. He's just 15, but he has good stats for it and he's young. And he will be a good teacher for squad training.

Note that we are now in contact with enclave and supermutants, so if I don't hurry, !!FUN!! comes very very soon.
