I'm actually studying genetics as part of my degree right now. I really hope this comes out soon while the knowledge of how to potentially abuse inherited genes is still fresh in my mind :P
Seconding that.

Isnt it just breeding two cats with desired traits while watching out for any genes that might cause or amplify existing genetic ailments?

Add in the fat trait.  Cause brittle boned fat saggy cats.  They can also be used in the meat industry...

I thought that you couldn't butcher the gibs from gravity-disassembled cats because the parts were too small?

Somehow I think a lot of you are going to be really disappointed at the actual level of cat mutilation/processing/cat mcnuggeting of the game.

Most of us are DF players here, we could probably draw blood from a literal rock if it caused suffering.
Virtual cats with inbuilt pain in some sense? A doddle to create a torture chamber cat farm with that.

I'm not expecting much in the way of direct violence to the cats, but I can easily see it becoming similar to the Creatures games. Did you ever play them? You could breed creatures that would eat detritus as food and avoid actual food as though it was poisonous, causing very ill norns, and whatnot. Also some of the gait mutations in that game were grim to say the least.
Does anyone remember that guy who made all the abused, traumatised norns and put them up for rehabilitation online? He got legitimate death threats mailed to his house by the community of a game based on caring for things.

Death threats? Some people are just too low. Too fucking low.
People who mail death threats should be banned from ever mailing again.

Agreed! The (albeit small) article on it is here and makes for interesting reading. I can see how he could have done the norn abuse with good intentions, giving broken norns for other people to care for and nurture back to health; but as he said the community at the time (and still, to a point, to this day) lacked a firm grip on reality, and took it entirely wrongly, imo. I found a post as late as 2009 of people still trying to track down the guy's home address :/
