I really hate whoever thought that making the first Duck start without any weapons that can be used against ground targets was a funny idea.

Luckily it can be used as a somewhat sucky heavy fighter if needed and the laughable bomb load isn't hard to unlock. The second one is a long ways off though :C

I'll have the 50mm Me410 to comfort me though :D

Well the 20 mm cannons can take out light tanks... and even mediums! If you are lucky and have the correct ammo that is... and you have to research that... making the entire thing pointless.

When Warthunder GF opened up a few weeks ago, I jumped on board to see what all the hype was about. I really enjoy the kind of restrictions WW2 era tanks put on combat compared to what you'll find in your average infantry combat game. Traverse speeds, longer engagement times, etc. all do their part to make tanks much more accessible to players who aren't very good at twitch shooters, so games like WT GF and WoT (and I assume some of the slower paced Mecha games) are highly desirable.

I've put a bit of time into it, currently playing around in the SU-85, T-34-57, KV-1 ZiS-5, and some other soviet stronk steel. I thought I'd talk a little on how I feel about the game as it currently sits. I'm going to compare it to WoT a bit just because I don't play anything else that I can compare it to.

So, let's start with things I really like about Ground Forces:

But, inevitably, there are also things I really dislike about WT. Unfortunately most of those are actually gameplay problems, which are some of the worst kinds of issues for a game to have:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

All in all, it's been a pretty negative experience - but there is potential. Currently I think the game is fairly poor, being not much more than a idea, pretty graphics, and a rough implementation... but I'm sure many will disagree. Time will tell where Warthunder will go. Hopefully its upwards, but at the very least giving World of Tanks a run for its money will help further competition in the genre.

Hope to see some people in-game!

very late edit:

I forgot to mention the research/crew system on my dislikes, but mark that down too. Something about having to unlock the ability to put out fires and repair broken modules really rubs me the wrong way, and I think both the research and crew systems are implemented in a convoluted way. Definitely something that could be easily improved.

Know what I really love?

When people see an Me410 and go "BETTER ATTACK IT HEAD ON LEL!!"

And then you get a triple kill.

Taking a break from the navel-gazing for a minute, War Thunder released for PS4 today.

I'm thinking of taking my fully tricked-out Chaika into arcade and trolling the console newbies.... :P

You terrible, hilarious person.

The flak tanks can be effective, you just gotta flank with them, if you can penetrate you'll make short work of pretty much anything since that RoF really butchers modules and crew alike.

Also considered doing the weekend mission, then played a couple of games which were frustrating enough to make me stop completely, because fuck that shit, a Havoc (or was it a Mitchell) variant is not worth it.

That Zis30 may look like a failed reject howitzer on a tank chassis but I know which tank I am researching first for russians.

Also, looks like this will be the ground Chaika.

It is for the most part, able to oneshot anything it faces, and it pretty much autopens everything it faces too.

Just gotta avoid getting shot at, because anything will kill you, even the flakpanzer firing AA ammo will kill you.

The new Chaika is the T50, it just cant be penetrated by T1 Germans, so have fun!

Yeah, the ZIs isn't that though. Sure, it can kill everything, but everything can kill you as well.

The T-50 is more problematic, the back of the turret has less than 20 mm of armor and it's main weak point, but otherwise you're going to need to bring a tank destroyer if you want to hurt it.
