So anyone still here.

It's fun to play with a controller, though you're at a disadvantage in dogfights, especially in arcade. Bombing is fun though.

I know this is a double post, but here's a question. I've noticed that planes, especially bombers have a tendency to sometimes get declared burned out within the first seconds of an encounter.

According to some research on the damage system, I think this is because of an attack igniting the fuel tank and the fact that a fuel tank ignition is declared fatal when the engine fails*. However, if the engine fails due another reason (ie, being shot up), then the attack is also fatal. Which is kind-off annoying, as my 2 engine bomber can fly perfectly with 1 engine down and on fire. I mean, I once successfully crashlanded it with no more functional parts than a single aileron. (Every other part was black. Engines were down, gear was shot and the tail rudder was mostly irresponsive.)

*Ie, when the fuel is burned up.

That is a bit annoying, but I think it's only the case in arcade. I've had similar things happen to me all the time, but I just roll with it, most of the time. Trying to crash land might have been interesting, but it's rarely the case I could get all the way back to base and repair without an engine(although i've done it a fair number of times, and those rare occasions you get a kill or two on the way back are glorious.) It's arcade mode, you've got more planes in your hangar, just let that one go. Historical and FRB don't do the death countdown on you, I believe, so if you think you can get the plane home on single aileron, be it's guest. I just consider the quickfiring death time a bit of a nerf on the arcade flight model and the size of the maps. Some maps, as long as you have a little altitude, you could get back to an airbase from ANYWHERE on the map. Arcade flight model is also a bit lenient on damage messing it up. Same damage that you could limp back on in Arcade would probably make HB or FRB uncontrollable.

sluissa is spot on on this one, they basically force you to leave the plane, becouse with arcade flight model you would be able to keep flying even in conditions where it wouldnt be "fair". So they kind of say: "ok its enough, just leave the plane this is just stupid" :P

Stil, their death system is a bit strange. I mean, I was allowed to stay flying with a plane that had lost practically everything, but was kicked out instantly out of a practically unharmed plane. (Single rotor damaged and light fuel leak.)

I checked, and my pilot didn't get knocked out.

It's not always perfect, but it "helps". Especially considering so many of the planes are made out of Sovietonium or Beauminum. Again, HB doesn't have it, so if it bothers you that much, give them a try. I've also had a few situations where I was counted as dead, despite all evidence to the contrary. I was flying that terrible Japanese float plane fighter in a HB, landed next to the wrong carrier, it counted me as crashed but didn't end the game for me. I took off again, landed next to the correct one, repaired, got back into the air. A few minutes later, I ended up being the last plane on my team... and the game said my team had no planes left, because it counted me as crashed, despite my ability to continue flying. I saw this happen to a poor PBY who had both wings sheared off, but managed to land in the water and was driving back to the carrier as a gunboat. Counted as crashed, despite the fact that he got back to the carrier and was able to repair. Again, last plane alive, not counted as so, and the game ended.

The game has its problems. Anyone who's spent more than a few hours playing will tell you, but it's generally pretty good, and even the sorta wonky things are usually there for a reason.

I've never had the 'crashed' problem personally. If you haven't evacuated your plane yet you normally don't count as 'downed'.

Have they replaced the bittorent-based patching system yet, or are they still using that, because that was a dealbreaker for me.

AFAIK you can use the bittorrent, or just download it from the client.

As for crashed... Well, in arcade battle it's usually faster to crash and start afresh than try to repair your plane.

Golden battles will take place this weekend. Players from different time zones can participate. And you have an opportunity to win up to 600 Golden Eagles!

November 17th from 02:00 to 06:00 GMT and from 15:00 to 19:00 GMT (November 16th from 18:00 to 22:00 PST and November 17th from 10:00 to 14:00 PDT) players have a unique opportunity to gain Golden Eagles:

for the 2nd victory — 100 Golden Eagles
for the 4th victory — 100 Golden Eagles
for the 7th victory — 100 Golden Eagles
So anyone but Europe can easily participate. What's wrong with a full day.

I'm afraid there's only option for us Europeans. To do what happened last time. A DDOS.

Am I missing something? 15:00 to 19:00 GMT seems quite reasonable to play for europeans.

I get this fairly often. It tends to happen most when you flip while landing.

Nah, It's a most annoying time really. Just to early actually.

Edit: On a side note, are the servers irresponsive for anyone else?

Yeah, they appear to be down for maintenance.  Unfortunately I can't check the maintenance schedule on the forums like they say, because the forums are down too...

And I was only 3-4 kills away from todays challenge...
