Does this support joysticks, or is it just M/KB? I have a really nice joystick I'd like to use. Or is it awkward, like some driving games that technically support a wheel but auto-adjust your steering in a way meant for keyboard controls instead of analog input anyway?
I managed to get my joystick running, but it hasn't gone well. First time was in early Beta and I was in multiplayer, and it seemed using my joystick gave me a big disadvantage. People could just flip right around me using mouse controls (although this could have been because I was new and awful).
However, I tried again a month later and didn't even finish the tutorial. Even when the sensitivity slider was literally at 0, the plane would be so sensitive to the slightest touch.
So, as long as you have a decent joystick, I think you'll be okay. :P

In arcade mode, mouse controls are likely more precise. Realistic mode handles quite differently, and if you can set up your joystick properly (took me a while...) perhaps then you get a slight advantage?

also for the simulation fans out there:

i think there are modes and settings where you can turn tons of arcade&action stuff to realistic/simulation similar to il2 sturmovic.

and i am pretty sure i saw somewhere that you can create custom missions, and there are even settings for custom dynamic campaigns too...

I haven't poked the Realistic mode, but that's where your engine stalls going too high, and your wings break off going too fast - many high-tier aircraft are equipped with airbrakes so they don't destroy themselves during a dive.  Specifically, naval dive-bombers.

For anyone having trouble surviving in Arcade mode matches - don't forget that you're an airplane, not a car.  You can hit a/d to do barrel rolls, and combined with mouse movement to angle you in one direction, you can make erratic and tricky turns by rolling in one direction while trying to turn.  You can also hold s to do a flip, or w if you're high enough - even bombers can do this!  And if you are a bomber, invest heavily into your gunners.  Just, get those gunners to be the best you can!

I've been meaning to start into this. It certainly looks more promising than WoA, just based off initial impressions.

e: Having played it, I'm less than impressed. Not with the game itself per se, but with the fact that I was getting serious lag and only ~10 FPS (on medium settings), when I can play things like WoT at 100+ FPS with no lag, and even PS2 with ~30 FPS and little/no lag.

I also have to question: Is it intended for aircraft to randomly start shaking horizontally through a ~8 degree arc? Because it makes it damned near impossibly to aim or land safely.

Try adjusting your settings, I'm not exactly on a supercomputer but I'm having the opposite problem of too high fps running my system too hot (currently using 'max' setting).

If you're using a joystick, there is some talk about a big 'wobble' problem when trying to make fine adjustments/aiming. http://forum.warthunder.com/index.php?/topic/18541-why-does-this-game-hate-joystick-users/

Edit: I'm having trouble calibrating my controller. I've set the pitch sensitivity so far down that the logical position doesn't even MOVE when I test it in the menu, yet ingame the slightest pull sends my nose shooting up or down and into a stall. I thought perhaps the changes weren't taking effect in the same game session, so I quit and started a new flight-- still no change. What the hell? Roll and Yaw feel fine.

For the latter, I'm playing mouse and keyboard. And the wobble happens even when I'm not touching anything.

But as for the former, I'm already on medium-low graphics (enough that it should still be resting on the GPU rather than CPU), and the settings wouldn't affect connectivity. I'm just assuming they've got a lot of optimization to do; it is still beta. I'll certainly be popping back in every so often to see what's happened, but for now it's WoT for my WW2 MMO goodness.

The first time I used my joystick, it assumed my rudder was either ALL THE WAY to the left or ALL THE WAY to the right. For some reason control setup wizard fixed it.

The wobble comes from low FPS combining with the computer's attempts to center itself on the mouse reticle making it yaw left and right repeatedly and missing the mark. The game takes up a lot more computer resources than WoT does, because apparently accurately simulating flying stuff is much harder than accurately simulating not flying stuff. Who'd have thought?

But, seriously, the game makes my good computer run hard enough to randomly crash. My lappy has the same wobble problem (which I usually solved by zooming in since it seems to make the computer's compensation a little finer).

Huh, I don't experience any wobbles even though I'm running it at about.. 19~21fps average.

Edit, turns out, I have about 28 to 31 fps, my appologies.

Weird, My comp isn't exactly top tier, but I haven't had any wobbles or crashes (except for when I pull up late, I keep getting a CTM (crash to mountaintop)).

My computer isn't top-tier either, but it does have a quad-core 3.8 GHz processor, 16 gigs of RAM and a GTX 550 Ti graphics card. It's definitely up there. And War Thunder makes it run too hot for my fan banks to keep up.

As for the wobbles, it only happens when FPS gets under about 17-ish. Below 10 FPS, not even zooming in fixes it.

I actually put an fps limiter working so it never goes above 60fps in my games :)

Good game, obviously still in beta though. Chat system is better than WoT, but still bad. Tech trees and the planes within are pretty limited. The MM is completely wonky, and you've got some severe balance issues because they're trying to balance the planes for both modes. For example, a lot of the American planes are left in the dust compared to their Russian or German counterparts in Arcade mode. I also feel like there's some Russian bias, honestly.

I do like the game, of course. It feels so great to get a kill streak in WT. You're also able to destroy any plane in the game with any other (for the most part). I've had biplanes take out my P40/P39s dozens of times, and I've taken out Tier 13 planes with my Tier 3. It's pretty well optimized, too, so you can play with 20fps and it still won't feel that laggy.

One thing that's really bugging me is no ability to reconnect to games you've been disconnected from.

So after a few matches yesterday using a gamepad, today I tried mouse aim.

Yesterday = no kills, all three reserves dead within the first 10 minutes.
Today = multiple air and ground kills, lasted 8 minutes in a single reserve.

Mouse aim is hilarious. It feels like cheating.
