Chickenscratch
« on: February 24, 2013, 10:44:41 pm »

I've had this idea for awhile now, but never got around to anything beyond a planning stage. I created a superhero named Chickenscratch sometime ago, and wrote some fiction about him.

The way he's a mix of hyper-gritty, but you know, runs around in a chicken costume, is meant to parody a lot of superheroes. I guess this would make him like early Judge Dredd.

A big point of the character is that he's basically me, if I were a superhero. So he's a libertarian nutjob that I might make a chronic masturbator. Haven't decided yet. Instead of being like batman, he just plain shoots villains, and when he doesn't shoot people he just gives out savage beatings. A lot of people are scared of him so they don't wanna screw with him, but the cops also hate him since he exposes corruption whenever he can.

I wrote some fiction with him in it, it's not very good and I haven't edited it, but I might post it here.

But the reason I made this thread is because I'm thinking I need an illustrator.

I'm sorry, but to be brutally honest no one is going to want to read about a self-insert superhero.

Yeah, I know, but the point is that this isn't literally me where I do laundry and hang out. He's still doing the super hero jazz, but he also has the personality and beliefs of a scumbag.

Even then, it seemed as if you just attached personality traits to him that you'd think would be edgy or cool just for the sake of being edgy and cool.. I have no idea why being a chronic masturbator would be a main trait of his personality, refer to my first sentence for this. It frankly overall just doesn't seem interesting to me, and as if you just tried to funnel a bunch of ideas that you'd think would be gritty or edgy into one character and ran with it.

That's the point. I probably won't go with the masturbator thing because it would be weird and offputting, but once again, the entire point of the character is that he is ridiculously gritty and edgy because he is a parody of gritty superheroes.

Throwing a bunch of super edgy and gritty things onto a character doesn't instantly makes him a parody, it just makes him a poorly written character.

Bro, if you wanted to say this from the beginning just say this. Just say the character sucks. Don't string me along trying to get me to define a parody.

The point here is that the character is a parody. This isn't debatable, but whether he's poorly written, that's a different thing entirely, man.

I realize that by himself, this isn't that strong a character, and to bring in any real themes I want to write about I'd have to have actually decent stories, and that's what I'm working on right now.

CWC is the shorthand for a very (in?)famous guy with autism who runs a series of comics with an idealized version himself as a main character. A lot of people have a combination of love and hate for his stories, but I kind of appreciate it because he's a troubled enough person that his comics serve as a direct look into his psyche.

Keep in mind, it's hard to interpret this as a good thing. At least from my perspective. Although I won't jump to calling him the next CWC, maybe if he does a sonic/pokemon crossover in it then sure.

Just looked into it. In addition to being a time machine, the website is only accessible as a web archive(that's a thing, right?)
Just found a presumably fan made wiki that included an article on him. I have a feeling it's gonna get pretty sad.

Although I didn't intend it to happen, Chickenscratch did end up being more like me. He considers himself a man of constant failures and he just assumes he'll just fail again. I did not intend the character to be like this. Just sorta worked out with him having the same self image as me. Weird.

And no, there won't be any crossover here. But Freeformgymteacher was talking about how this could end up being how I view the world. A social commentary, as it were. And it is, in part.

Freeformgymteacher

Sorry if I came off that way. I don't have time to illustrate but encourage your endeavors. If you'd like to share your fiction, you should feel free :)

Well, anything you want to publish is strictly up to you, but I don't think chicken costume plus hyper gritty is a compelling parody of superheroes. If he dresses like a chicken and acts like the punisher, then it's just the punisher in a chicken suit.

That said, it has the potential to be a parody depending on how the rest of the world is.

If it's one weird superhero in an endless void, it's obviously not parodying anything. If it's a weird superhero in a city full of parodies of other supers, which has a plot which parodies superhero stories, it's a parody no matter how weird or normal the main character is.
