Odd taste after hitting of the head
« on: February 24, 2013, 05:29:31 pm »

Right, here's a bit of backstory to this:
I was at a friend's and going up some stairs but horribly misjudged the height of the ceiling. I rose up on to a step perfectly so that I hit the very top of my noggin' on the ceilingy bit. It wasn't particularly hard, and yet I got a nasty taste in my mouth after doing it. If I had to place it, all I could say is it's kinda bitter. Now, that on its own wouldn't be a problem, but it keeps coming back.

Since then, it has happened when I was jumpscared in Amnesia, when I loudly dropped my phone on a wooden floor and when I started a race in swimming.
So it seems to be linked to stress/adrenalin or something, but I don't really have a clue why it happens.
I wasn't quite sure how to phrase it in everyone's favourite search engine, so I thought I'd see if anyone knew about it here first.
Thanks!

Could be blood, could be brain damage, could be psychosomatic.

It seems to be non serious, but I'm no doctor and typically after a head injury that does more than just hurts you want to get it looked at. I didn't after I got knocked on the head pretty damn hard and lost an eye for my lack of commitment to getting it checked.

If you ever feel any dizzyness, problems with motor control or vision odditys you'll want to get it looked at. Otherwise it could be psychosomatic as MSH suggested.

If its a metallic taste, that's a sign of brain injury, and I'd get it checked.

Blood tastes metallic, Glyph.

Either way, this is kind of one of those emergency room things, rather than one of those appointment next week things.

There's a very noticeable difference between the taste of blood and the taste of metal even if blood does have a hint of the other. And if he's bleeding into his mouth from an injury to the head, that's still probably worth getting checked out...

Why the fuck would you ask on an internet forum?

Go see a doctor.

Get to a doctor. You depend on your nervous system far too much to neglect it. The symptom may not be very distressing, but it suggests some part of your nervous system is misfiring. You don't know enough to judge whether it's worth seeking treatment, and the possible effects of an untreated brain or spine injury are too grave to ignore in the hope that you don't have one.

Go see a doctor.

According to his profile he's 15 and male.

BTW, OP, you should know that brain or spine injuries can lead to ED, aka Dick Don't Work.

Alright.
I'm fairly sure the taste isn't blood. It's definitely more bitter than metallic.
Why the fuck would you ask on an internet forum?

Go see a doctor.
I didn't see it as very serious, and was wondering if anyone had the same thing. It seems you haven't, and all think it's very serious.
It's been two weeks since this happened and a quick browse around the web (no, I'm not google-doctoring) shows a lot of other people get this with anxiety (albeit, without the face hitting first).
Is the head hitting bit the reason it is so serious? Lots of people seem to just get it, but because I'm only getting it after that suggests there could be more problems? Also:

Thanks for keeping my best interests at heart. :D

We don't know that it's serious.  We don't know much of anything.  It's just that if it is serious, it could very well kill you, or worse.  Do you really want to take the chance that your brain is swollen or has a slow bleed while you don't know about it, the increased pressure is what's causing the weird taste symptom, and the next symptom to come up is something like paralysis in part of your body? If it were me, I'd rather find out sooner rather than later, so if it is something serious, and something that can be treated, it gets treated before it gets worse, becomes permanent, or both.

As for my personal theory

It is Bile. You developed a upchuck reflex to being scared and now whenever you get afraid your body prepares to puke.

Ok the ONLY way for him to taste blood from a blow to the head is if his lungs started bleeding. Which is very common during a fall. For example when I fell of my porch and suffered a fractured skull... My lungs filled with blood.

Which for anyone who doesn't know what happens if you injest too much blood. It makes you very queezy and you will puke.

So once again. That bitter taste could be bile.

How is he supposed to tell whether he's actually tasting something bitter, or just receiving incorrect sensory input, exactly?

First of all: Go see a doctor.

I had a similar phenomenon in my youth, but without the head-hitting bit. I got a bitter taste in my mouth in moments of axiety or contentration. Turned out this was caused in a hairline crack in a tooth, which was rotting away from the inside without me noticing it. Ew. The crack spread apart a bit whenever i clenched my teeth, which i did frequently when stressed or frightened.
The chance that your problems have the same causre are minimal, but if your family doctor can't help you, you might want to check when you last saw a dentist.
