Adventure mode ocean crossing?

Hey guys this is my first post here so yay! I was wondering if anyone could help me with crossing oceans, what i am trying to do is get from one island to another, i tried to upload a picture of my map but i dont know how because i am dumb.

Welcome to the forums Domicrow! I hope you lose your sanity have a good time here! :)

I'm afraid that crossing oceans is an incredibly difficult/boring/time consuming thing to do. You can't fast travel over them; you must manually swim through every tile. Don't get me wrong; it's possible but generally isn't worth it-though it does make a good challenge. If you still want to try here are a few tips:

1. Train swimming to a high level before attempting this. This will reduce the chance of you drowning. ;)
2. Make sure that you do not try this in winter or in cold areas-the sea could freeze and kill you instantly.
3. Remember to take a supply of food and water with you! You won't find anything to eat in the middle of the sea (unless you meet a sea monster, which will probably kill you before you kill it) and you obviously can't drink seawater. Calculate well; carrying too much will slow you down and make you tired faster.
4. The easiest way to swim across an ocean is to be a vampire/thrall/husk, since none of them has the danger of drowning (they don't breathe). They also have the added bonus of not needing to eat, though a vampire actually requires fresh blood to survive, so that might be a problem. You can also try swimming across as a necromancer, which does not require food or water but can drown.
5. If the land form you are trying to reach is near arctic areas, you could try walking over the frozen sea. However this poses a big problem: a supposed bug can cause walls of ice to suddenly rise in the seabed, blocking your path and possibly killing you.

How to upload a picture (and add it to your comment):

1. Press the 'print screen' button on your keyboard. It's usually located next to the scroll lock button on the upper right section of your keyboard and is generally shortened to 'PrtScn' or 'Prt sc'.
2. Paste the picture into an editing program such as Microsoft Paint and save it.
3. Go to an image hosting site and upload the image. I personally like imgur (which is free and doesn't require registering).
4. Once you've uploaded the image, click on it to open it in a separate page and copy that page's url. Then paste the url into your comment, highlight it and click on the 'image' button (right underneath the Bold button). This should enclose the image's url in img and /img.

AHA! thanks man! here is what i am trying to do, the sea is already frozen so i started walking but i got trapped in an ice wall and died about half wayn through, luckily i backed up the save so i can try again =)

A few more tips - one, you can still drink the 'coverings' of water on your body and clothes. They are potable and not salty. You can also start walking in the early evening when the water freezes. Start walking, and when the ice melts, swim.

Are that the land in the upper left you are trying to reach is really an island, and not connected to the main land mass?  If it is not an island, it will be much faster and easier to swim (or walk over ice) back to the mainland and then walk the long way around the shoreline over to the land across the water.

I agree. It looks very much like the other edge of the ocean. Going back east to the mainland and walking around the ocean is going to be much safer (if you get killed by ice walls half-way across, that's a good sign that the ocean has too many freeze issues to cross like this), although it will likely take _much_ longer.

In order to avoid drowning, you don't need a 'high' level, you need all of 'adequate' (level two) skill, which reduces your chances of drowning to a very reasonable zero percent. With adequate skill, you can only start drowning when you dive below the surface, and that you must do deliberately. And once you go back to the surface, you should instantly stop drowning again. Vampires' non-breathingness allows them to actually walk on the ocean bottom, if you want to. They'll still use their swimming speed while doing so.

That amount of ocean tiles will take about a full day to cross assuming you're bad at swimming. Only thing to do is keep going.

And yes, I'm serious. I've crossed the sea a couple of times without ever meeting anything. The only thing you have to worry about is the water freezing and not swimming past your target.
Though getting good at swimming is of course a good idea, and it ought to take about two in-game days to hold a key that goes towards a tile of water that is blocked by a tree on the next step and the opposite key.

I did try that initially but i was incased in ice within about 30 tiles

Check 'P' and 'W' for the local temperature and time of day when you consider swimming - when it's 'cold' and in the second half of the day (sun somewhere westerly), it will likely turn to 'freezing' at some point, which means all water turns solid and kills any submerged creature - in one frame, without warning. I often cross rivers when it's 'cold' and cooling down, but wouldn't dream of engaging in extended swimming training or crossing oceans under such conditions.

With the cold situation as is, crossing the ocean is not very likely to work. Either you swim and the ocean freezes at some point, instant-killing you (and for that distance, you'd take most of a day to make it across) or you walk on an already-frozen ocean and get caught by buggy icewalls.

Is the landmass on the north-western border of the screen yet another big island or is it connected to the continent to the east? In the latter case, you could walk all around the coast, perhaps swim across at a point where the water remains non-frozen all through the night, then cross the one-tile gap from the northwestern peninsula. It's a much longer way, but it's also much more likely to be actually feasible.

In icy biomes, i really wouldn't like to cross water more than two worldmap grids wide.

there is another picture showing the full map further down =)  and unfortunately i had to give up on this project due to unforseen fun... "Urist McNoob has been struck down by fifty bajillion bleak freaks"

EDIT: are there any plans to add boats to the game?

Boats and everything sea-related (pirates, sea monsters, underwater dungeons) are planned, but there's no timeline.
