It's not really that new, since I suppose that obsidian encasing exists for quite some time now (given the time between particular updates).
But has it been used to ultimately punish the guilty innocent dwarves elven children?

I wanted to try it out in Arena mode first, but - rock is created instead of obsidian. Why? D:<
Anyways, while I haven't got an opportunity to try it out yet (and will probably never have), I feel like it's essentially an obsidian farm made via bridge method - only much smaller. (also, burrows)
Would be even better with some way of dropping the obsidian carbonite into lava afterwards.

Is that possible? Or are there some mechanics I have no idea about that prevent this from happening?

Perhaps making a garbage dump over a hatch would work, but other than that I don't know how that would be carried out.
Keep us updated though, this sounds like a lot of fun to do.
Reminds me of this:

Given what one is playing with here, it's more like Fun if anything.
Also, is there SOME way of making water+magma forming obsidian instead of stone in Arena mode? (I know that it's not making much of a difference in the end, and that there aren't any mechanisms and whatnot to be placed in there, but still)

In syrupleaf, obsidian encasing was used for executions, then the obsidian was mined to make their famed soul-infused swords.

In a hole in the ground there lived a dwarf. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a dwarf fortress, and that means magma.

I was thinking how to pull this off (not a bad idea to implement into my fort), you make a small 1x1x1 room with a magma pump manually used to pump into the room above it (1x1x1), and the hatch it rests atop is magma-proof, and up above that room is a room with a devoted 1x1x1 (or 1x2x1) room full of water (ceremoniously filled by bucket). Just make sure to flip the execution switches in the correct order, otherwise, the system would jam, and you'll have to mine it free. You may need a bauxite (mechanism) floodgate to take care of that, just in case. Now make sure to keep that closed just in case, unless you want more ‼fun‼ to befall your fort.

Illustrated:

A ▓▓▓▓▓▓ ◄Remote Hatch      (Dumped by bucket, ceremoniously) Fill to 7
!  ▓%%◄Remote Hatch      (Pump accessed safely from the side) Fill to 7
O▓▓≈MAGMA≈≈MAGMA≈≈MAGMA≈ (To make it especially epic for the witnesses, make it visible with a glass portal.
▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓≈MAGMA≈≈MAGMA≈≈MAGMA≈      And maybe glass walls/windows.)

Switch red, then blue, and mine out the rest; reset hatches, and repeat the process.
