At peace with the goblins - this must end
« on: February 23, 2013, 10:47:48 pm »

Hey guys,

Upon reclaiming a fortress lately, my Dwarven civilisation has made peace with the goblins and kobolds somehow. (In fact, all known civs are at peace with each other.) Considering the fortress is geared specifically for war, there isn't nearly enough fun happening. The archers waste their time shooting kestrels from the parapets, and the swordsdwarves have only berserk children to practise on.

The goblins never show up, with either sieges, raiders, or caravans, and are listed as peaceful in the civilisation screen. The elves have been sending caravans up until the year before last, when I slaughtered them, and haven't contacted me since. Is it possible to end this hideous peace with the goblins, possibly by modifying the game?

Here it is, modest and incomplete, but effective:

So to recap, one minute everything was going just great, and the next we have caverns collapsing, firebreathing cave beasts, underground brush fires, a screaming swarm of poltergheists back for revenge, zombies in the corridors, drunken brawls in the dining halls, magma pouring into the caverns, rotting miasma everywhere, insanity, madness, and a flying crocodile heading right towards us!

You can always breach hell in such a way that they have to run through the front of your gate in order to reach the outside world. You can also route FB's this way, luring them up to the top via furniture traps.

According to the wiki, they occasionally send a caravan if you're at peace with them. Try destroying a couple of those.

They show up as "peaceful" but still attack you even if you're not really in war with them.

If they don't send caravans I don't know how you would anger them. Maybe someone smarter does. However, you can always go to war with the humans and elves. Elves are wusses, but I find humans are more challenging than goblins due to actually having a semblance of strategy. Just kill them, kill them all (maybe let one escape to tell the tale).

Sure, but there's not much need for it. Kobolds usually get grated like cheese on the weapon traps, and the kestrels are kept at bay by the bored archers. If ever a titan comes, the walls, bridges and pits are sufficient to hold it at bay while the military flanks it.

Dig a separate staircase down to hell. Instead of containing the invasion, allow it to spread to the surface, where it will inevitably path towards your main entrance. Don't enter seige mode. Fight it off.
That or piss off the elves. They're not really dangerous but it should be easy to do. Humans are also possible to piss off, and they're slightly more dangerous. If you're (un)lucky you could also get a necromancer siege.

There's plenty of opportunities for war for the talented and greedy dwarf.

Alright, Project Dorfhole is in progress: a large shaft straight down to the great candy-cane gates to the circus. Meanwhile, the masons construct a defensive wall between the fortress and the Dorfhole.

20 layers down, 150 or so to go. The fortress is in its ninth year, and is currently at war with the goblins. Despite the minor lake of elf-blood in which the depot swims, the elves happily continue to send caravans for our amusement. We sincerely thank them for all of the gifts of cloth and caged leopards. :D
