Well, a little over 2 years ago I discovered Let's Play style videos which got me into Minecraft. Out of the friends I made through Minecraft, several played DF and so naturally I had heard of DF as one of the inspirations for Minecraft. So I had heard about it, sometimes the other Dorfs in the chat room would talk a little about it... then I read Boatmurdered... specifically it was the one player who decided his administrator was Al Swearengin that made me decide I had to try this crazy game...

I came across DF because I was spending a lot of time on Discworld MUD and a bunch of people on the main chat channel were going on and on and on about some some thing called Dwarf Fortress, and I got sooooooo fed up of this gibberish cluttering up my screen all the time, I decided to check it out.

I spent 36 hours straight playing it the first time.  I just didn't even consider sleeping.  At the time I was spending about 16 hours a day on the MUD, and for about a month I just replaced that with DF.  This was nearly 4 years ago now I think.  Things were changing fast, every update had a change in functionality, it seemed.

I truly don't remember. I heard of it somewhere and decided to give it a try. This was just around 0.31 (don't remember which version)
I had initially some problems getting in and gave up on the gave after a few hours. Then a few weeks later I continued playing and got my first functional fortress. (I  still remember the dangers that dwelled in the rivers, my first flood when I was directing the river inside my fortress for mud and water and my first failure of screwing around with making obsidian in the magmasea (Lost my last pickaxe and anvil there. Had to abandone afterwards) Then I stopped playing again for a while.

A month or two before 0.34 I was reading about something in the internet and ended up downloading DF again and I have been playing actively ever since.

During a discussion about games I brought up a near ascension/YASD in nethack I had recently had. Hearing that, one of the group started talking about Dwarf fortress. The game sounded so insane I had to check it out. Dwarves have been suffering for that ever since.

A coworker introduced me to Minecraft back in Alpha.  While reading up on Minecraft and trying to decide if I wanted to buy in on that I discovered that it was influenced by Dwarf Fortress.  Being a longtime fan of NetHack, I of course had to try the ASCII equivalent of SimCity, and have been enjoying DF ever since 0.31.04.

I was pitching an article idea to cracked.com (which they didn't like, but which knew needed some tweaking to fit their format). anyway, there was a guy who kept on pitching an idea for a DF article and I read his pitch and his discussion of the game and thought it sounded pretty fun.

I downloaded it, and unlike a lot of people I hear about, I resolved to figure it out without giving up. I lost two forts within a few hours but found the wiki and got the hang of the bare-bone basics and I must say that over the past 2 1/2 years I have become quit good.

Years and years ago, I ran across DF when looking for free games.  I downloaded it, installed it, opened it, blinked in hopeless confusion and deleted it.

Then, maybe two years ago I sought it out.  I'd heard about it here and there.  Little snippets, rumors of legends, nothing concrete, all spoken with vague overtones of awe, wonder and complete and devastating horror.  So I googled and found bay12.  And this time I read instructions, guides and most importantly the wiki.

I was intrigued by a thread on the XKCD forums, and then I started reading some stories and found myself giggling at the shenaigans.  I picked up one of the play by play tutorials from these forums, tinkered with it and then put it down for a year.  Then one day I found myself actually wanting to learn how to play it, so I picked up Captain Duck's youtube videos and I was hooked.

I was browsing the LP Archives and I read all of Syrupleaf. I'm amazed I had the patience to do so (but not the patience to read the prequels.) Then some time later I downloaded it.

I don't know why you are looking at things this old, but I'm fiddling around with simple machines forums' system, so I edited a few things to check how it works.

Consider it and easter egg for snooping around people's post history... Artificially sent!
