I came across it one day on Youtube via a Lets Play by PlumpHelmetPunk. I don't remember how I actually found his videos but I've re watched his DF series many many times. Especially the fallout modded one.

I found DF about 3 years ago through NetHack (a roguelike game).
I liked NetHack so I started looking through some other games with ASCII graphics, and DF was recommended in some website.

I have a friend who i saw playing it and he told me what it was cald i looked it up found Bronzmurder it was a great story and i had to get the game




DF is now my favorit game i have EVER played!

TvTropes, one of the main things that made me want to play was discovering that the game kept track of tensile strength and tensile yield instead of just fudging it and calling it "Hardness".

Does "while I was in my basement" count as underground?
And trying to run DF on an older computer with a dusty fan will surely cause it to be inside a box that's on fire.

I found it through Minecraft; sort of. I found it before I bought MC and was reading up on it and DF was a large influence so I tried to play it. Then I sucked at it and instead of just downloading the newest version I downloaded some pack for new players that came with a tutorial and the tutorial was too vague and sucked.
Then I picked it up a while later and tried the version that had been released at the time; and just picked it up really easily with no guides or anything. Sure showed up past!me. Made him look like a total moron.

I was looking for a free game like Sim City. I was broke at the time and very bored 'cause I'd given up on ever having the time to be decent at a certain MOBA (That, and the terribly stale gameplay had me yearning for something else. Multiplayers are just depressing to me anymore). By the time I had the money to buy a decent game, there was no need. Who needs to go looking for a new game when you've already found the circus?! That was about a year ago.

When I got into Minecraft during the alpha, one of my friends recommended Dwarf Fortress. After a couple of hours of having no clue what I was doing I gave up. Recently I saw someone link the now infamous Ars Technica article, and it rekindled my interest.

Gotta thank anyone that even remotely contributed to the DF2012 Quickstart Guide! That thing is a lifesaver! I'm still a total noob at the game, but thanks to the guide, I haven't fully had "fun" yet! I did have some Forgotten Blob come attack me, and one of my dwarves went beserk and hacked limbs off half my citizens...

I played a lot of towns. People said it is similar to DF, so here I am.

I was simply looking for a game with a good community that doesn't require good interwebs and a game where I could play over, forever and ever.
Edit: And Nist Akath, that story was truly epic.
