Someone made a video about the perfect metropoly in SimCity 3000. Here is the link:And in the comments section someone wrote: "I hope this guy never discovers Dwarf Fortress"
Here is the actual quote, for those interested who don't want to lock up their comp loading thousands of comments:
Quote from: Kriegsarschmann 2 years ago on YouTube
Holy shit I actually peed a little bit when I read that. This guy playing M-------- {expletive deleted} on this big, beefy super computer would be the most amazing thing ever seen. Or, shit, if he was playing Dwarf Fortress.

Can you imagine his fucking worldsave folder?
BTW, I actually looked it up because I thought for a minute it was me who posted that.
Nope, that's not it. The video was re uploaded.

I can't remember, but it was one year and a half ago, more or less. Maybe I read a thread in a forum, or found a related video while I was watching rogue-like games in Youtube...

I took the red pill - I stayed in Bay12land and the Toady One showed me how deep the Fluffly Wambler-hole went.

I had just finished playing Dwarfs! on Steam and I wanted more. So I started reading up on the Dwarfs! web page and found the creator's response to the question "What is Dwarfs!" He made it clear that Dwarfs! was not Dwarf Fortress.

I've been playing nonstop ever since.

I don't remember how did I find it, but I remember downloading it, installing it, generating a world, having my brains splattered on the wall as a consecuence of the awesomeness that I was witnessing, trying to play adventure mode and giving up. I didn't understand what was I supposed to do, but I remember entering a temple on a human site and a dude talking to me about some weird deity.

A few years later someone posted a tutorial on a spanish videogame forum and... well, here I am since then.

It was Boatmurdered. I was half dead from laughter and I was thinking,"I MUST GET THIS NOW!" as I had been searching for a game like this for about half a year and I was like "This is PERFECT!"

Mine was something between this:
Personally, I saw a community game played by members of another forum a long while back and got interested that way. The dude running the thing also linked to the Boatmurdered LP and that sealed the deal. Like with you, it took a while to even read the game, and then another embark or 3 to learn how to dig/build stuff/play the game.
I learned quickly that in 40d, carp were elephants of the water.
And this:
I got an interest in procedural generation, which led me to roguelikes, which led me to Dwarf Fortress.
I had just discovered TVTropes, too, though that wasn't a factor. I was still on the Nethack section of the "The Devs think of Everything" page, the first Tropes page I'd ever been linked to. Yes, DF was on there, but I hadn't seen it yet.

I heard about it when Tycho mentioned it in 2009. From there I started the tutorial he linked, and read boatmurdered and headshoots and syrupleaf... I was hooked.
