What is the worst that could possibly happen if you did attempt? Off of personal experience mine brought amusement (see sig :P). I'm fairly certain there is a how to lying about somewhere for adding weapons (on the wiki, unless I am thinking of something else, ie animals).

I'd rather see artifact decorations add weight, and the Planepacked glitch invoked on a blunt weapon.

Listen up: making a thing a ‼thing‼ doesn't make it more awesome or extreme.  It simply indicates the thing is on fire.  Get it right or look like a silly poser.

It's useful to keep a ‼torch‼ handy.

Artifact slade warhammers used to exist on account of it being treated as a metal iirc.

I made a squad of slade hammerers with dfhack's lua command line at one point, but they really weren't all that hot

Sure, but you'll still be playing the artifact roulette. You could get an artifact tin or wooden warhammer.

Your movement speed would drop significantly. And IIRC that also means your attack speed in this version.

Actually, it is possible to create an artifact slade warhammer in vanilla. Apparently, on some very rare occasions moody weaponsmith decides to use a boulder instead of metal bar as the base component. And there are several ways to mine slade. I even have a direct proof from some artifact bragging thread:
