Turn based shooting games?
« on: February 23, 2013, 09:59:59 am »

Could any of you recommend some turn based shooting games? I'm referring to the kinds of games like X-Com, Silent Storm, & Man of Prey, and in Man of Prey's case, it doesn't necessarily need you to control multiple characters.

Games discussed:
  • Jagged Alliance 2.
  • Classic Fallouts 1,2, & Tactics.
  • DoomRL.
  • Valkyria Chronicles.

Put into this light, Dr. Robotnik and Armok could easily have been roommates.

Valkyria Chronicles?  Although as he Escapist/Zero Punctuation/Yhatzee would explain, it's incredibly strange because while you're taking your turn the enemy shoots at you constantly.  So it's like 'turn-based strategy except everyone plays out of turn except you'.

Jagged Alliance 2 is one of my favourite games ever. Especially when coupled with the amazing 1.13 mod.

Fallout 1-2 are classic cRPG games; Fallout Tactics isn't as good, but it's more tactical.

DoomRL is, unsurprisingly, a roguelike based on Doom.

I watched an LP of it and from what I gathered that was more like 'reaction fire' you see in most other games. Once you hit the button to aim your shot the enemy fire stops shooting and you can take your time aiming, i'ts just movement you need to worry about. I believe your own SMGers can do the same thing?

I really wish a game like that would come to PC or an actual non-handheld console cause it looks like it would be interesting to play.

I love Valkyria Chronicles! Superb game, just wish the sequel was on the PS3 and not just the PSP/Vita.

Kerberos, the makers of Sword of the Stars, just put out The Pit. It's a turn based shooter/slasher permadeath game with "fog of war" behind your character (you do not have eyes in the back of your head). $9 US right now on gamersgate. No DLC/DRM.

The only playthrough of the release version I know of right now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TphgGB_QiI8

Is Man of Prey any good?  Hard to find info on it.

I'll second Jagged Alliance II w/1.13 mod.
Unity of Command is higher level but very accessible and allows deep and nuanced strategies with logistical grounding.

Incubation was pretty damn good, although it was also rage-inducing hard at times. Draws a lot of influence from Space Hulk. The combination of very limited ammo, time and weapon overheat with tough and numerous enemies made every decision matter. Graphics haven't aged well though, but if you can get past that and the frustration that comes with the difficulty, it's an often forgotten and underrated gem.

Underrail is this sorta kinda Fallout-like indie RPG, currently in alpha funding with a demo available.
Rebelstar: Tactical Command, made by the creators of the original X-Com. Rather simpler and mission based compared to X-Com as far as I've played.

Among really obscure stuff that I haven't even played properly there's Soldiers at War and Wages of War.

Try something out of the Combat Mission series. Not traditional turn-based game per se, but very neat.
