Crypt? Tomb? Catacombs? Crawlspace?

That is what a crawlspace is for, isn't it?

12th Timber, 223
We got a supply from the Mointainhome! We definitely would appreciate the taste of old mature dwarven rum - the booze they are making here tastes like shit. Because no one here has brewing skill, just theoretical knowledge. Since I'm still in bed, I ordered Joe to check the supplies and store them in stockpile.

WHAT?!They are SELLING that?! And what happened with supply contract I signed with Government?! They could not just cancel it!!!!

Shit. We have nothing in exchange and none has really good skill... except Bobnova! She's a master carpenter! So we ask her to make more chests, beds, cabinets and sell it for food and drinks.

And I definitely will write a note to Medical Academy Adminitrator about that...

Hell. We just startted bringin the furniture that Bobnova made when they packed and left.

12th Opal.
I'm up and well! Brother Cerebrum fixed my broked leg, and I can do my work again.
First I had a talk with trade liaison and asked him to bring more food and drinks next time. Also, some of cloth, dwarven syrup and dimple dye. We should wear uniforms here!
And I wrote that note to administrator. Next time we'll get our supplies for sure! Till that - lets live on our own.

Then I went for a walk to observe everyone here. I like my patients, I'm almost a friend to them.

And since I'm up, let's throw a party in a dining hall! Wait we have no dining hall... Let's make one then! Deprislava? could you please.... Deprislava? Where's she??? Who've seen her last time?

Bobnova has denounced Wix as delusional. Whether such denouncements from a patient mean anything is, of course, in the hands of the staff :D

A diagnosis session of Bobnova:
- Me? Insane?! I was the sanest person in Mountainhome! That's all others just trying to drive me mad. Especiallly that loafer Nix! Where's he, again spending his time staring at the water and trying to conversate with fishes? Oh. His delusions never were so strong as lately! He even said he's worried of Enemies and needs something to defend with. Keep an eye on him, Doc.

Me too!  :D

Deprislava Sodeakun was sitting at the darkest corner of the hall. She'd happily spent whole her life there so no one ever touched her.. but with rules that are there it was impossible.
The only time she felt good was her work deep in the mines. When she breached caverns she was so eager to stay there forever - far, far away from those Docs, Guards and others. They never believed when she told stories about escaping from falling Autumnalshield - when she had to dig her way into caverns, then explored it for the way out, feeding on wild mushrooms... That were great times! Then she spent a few days in some long forgotten lair with strange runes and things... She liked that place and wanted to come back some time.

So, the decision has grown in her head. She can dig her own lair and spend her time there with no more troubles from anyone!

She took her pick, found the place at the corner of big food stoclpile and started digging stairs down. Then she took one of hatch covers that were stored for trade and covered the stair with it, then locked it inside. And went on digging. That was the first time she dug witout any plans, just swinging her pick left and right. Soon enough she made a quite big hall. That was good.

Next thing she had to worry about was water supply. She dug toward the aquifer, and hit it soon enough. She pinshed it, turned back... - MEOW!!! - A cat? how it get here? I don't like cats! SHOO! Go home! - And she went back to her, completely her quarters. She destroyed the stairs she made down, so it was the true well. Now she just needed to wait till water fills it.

Water level was raising, slowly flooding the newly dug well channel. When it got up to the topmost mark, a soaking wet cat jumped out of it.

- You again!
...
She drinked from her new well, then found a boulder and shaped it so it looked roughly like a throne. She needed a place to rest for a while. A cat jumped on her knees.

Since we coudn't find Deprislava and her pick anywhere, we made new pick and gave it to the Zan. He started to slowly dig room for future dining hall. It's good to have a place where you can sit and have a snack, right? Oh, of course I have my own office, but having dinner there lacks some social relationship.

So, Zan is digging, guards are fidhing, Bobnova is planting seeds instead of making masterfull barrels - why? we need barrels for brewing! Forget that field and go make barrels!

And we have a huge group of patients! 27 to be precise. It was a really hard to write files for all of them
Adults:
Oddom Sosadcatten
Dastot Nebelducim
Asen Edtulcog
Aban Ebalfikod

Children:

Urist Keskalallas
Erush Bardumtekkud
Lorbam Kadolmis
Most of them have some skill with weapons. Maybe Academy sends us mind-crippled soldiers? And Madness more likely hits those who deals with war and orders? Have to investigate!

Deprislava finally found out that she frogot one very important thing. Food! Hunger made her check every foot of her lair, but no edible mushrooms she found. She had no strength to dig the way down to that cavern, and she'd rather starve here than open the hatch back to "Others". A cat, clever enough, was hiding from her somewhere in the dark... if there were rats she'd catch them for food! But rats hasn't dug their holes here yet.

She lent againist the closed hatch, almost smelling the vast storages of fish just above. It was so close... She could just reach it with her hand! She imagines like there were no obstacle between her and the barrel of fish and extended her hands in the darkness... Suddnely her hand met no obstacle and touches something slimy and cold!  She grabbed it and pulled back!

She suddenly realized herself with a salmon and two squids in her hands. W-w-what just happened?!

((OOC: Couldn't managed to make ger gather food from main stockpile without mixing them, so I just dumped her a few pieces of food with dfhack))

While I was busy with papers, Archmage Joe invited our new guests into the palisade
- So, first of all, you all shoud pass some sanitary processing. Nothing special, everyone just should jump in that cart and push off into the tunnel...

(( See what happened next http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-2534-sanitarytube))

So, one dead, 10 injured. Bathtube is a bloodbath now.

Quite the inprocessing setup, I approve.

In the interest of functional cleaning water movement might be a good idea. A carefully calibrated pump system to provide water flow and filtration might be a good idea. Some gratings to prevent patients from being washed into the reservoir, followed by a deep/large enough reservoir to contain the water in case of pump failure (no need to flood the fortress) and a short pump stack to get the water up to the proper level.
With side to side flow and a single diagonal feed space that then widens out to provide a roughly laminar flow across the hall might even be able to keep the correct water level. I'll test it if I have a chance.

Pump Operation Therapy comes to mind, too.

Heeee heeheeheehee. Beautiful.

well, its like: trackstop where dwarf starts riding, ramps with ╔-like tracks, trackstop with lowest friction where the another minecart set, fortification.
It lacks the empty space, is it important?
Ooookay, definitely need to switch to a one-minecart design so there's only one thing to run into. I'm still not totally sure about the empty space. I think it's needed for the upward teleport?

I ran a test of another design using my long-suffering Hermit. The results were extremely interesting! No serious injury resulted and strange teleportation effects occurred! Serious weird Science happened! (Meanwhile, his one-dwarf-constructed 4 barrel water cannon shredded a 60-goblin/troll siege. It was lovely.)

The most important difference is only using 3 impulse ramps and, ideally, a very light wooden minecart. I bet featherwood would help.

Here's the design, side view again:
Code: [Select]
░          ╬
░~~~~~~~~~▲░ ///C
░░░░░░░░░░░░_░
░ = solid rock, ~ = 5/7 water, ▲ = ramp with 5/7 water, ╬ = fortification, C = minecart on a track, / = impulse ramp, _ = floor

Here are the very weird results of the test!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I repeated the test. This time a leg was shattered (somehow by the minecart) when he struck the side wall. The Hermit did the weird 1-tick teleportation to the base of the minecart shaft, but I did not observe the minecart teleporting again.

I'll savescum and re-try without the drop shaft a with a big square landing area, to see what happens if he falls into the water instead of flying into a wall?

Please tell me to shut up if I'm hijacking the thread. This is still a great idea.

Yeah, don't send the minecart airborne if you want safe dwarf-flinging. Just run it into a wall with a fortification or open space above.

Here's a safe design, using a large landing bathtub. Enjoy! 11x15 is a pretty safe landing area. Larger would be safer. It's a fantastic swimming training machine and, inadvertently, a mist generator.
Code: [Select]
░                ╬
░~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~▲░_///C
░ = solid rock, ~ = 5/7 water, ▲ = ramp with 5/7 water, ╬ = fortification, C = minecart on a track, / = impulse ramp, _ = floor

Great science, gchristopher! I'll rebuild my design later. Also, I think I'll dorf you as Asen Edtulcog, Administrator. Our clinic needs a good manager!

But it was extremely fun watching them ride and fly one by one! Most of casualities were because of injured (or just stupid) dwarves staying on tracks while another dwarf rides the cart. Also, dwarves who stuck in fortifications tend to squeeze back on track, unless cannoned by another dwarf out into the pool.

Don't need an empty space above either, you can do a single Z dorf launcher.
Here's my test setup for an auto-washer with contaminate removal:

Z0, the whole launcher lies here. No holes in the ceiling at all (couldn't, my offices are directly above!)

Ironhand graphics. That's track, three north/east ramps, track, and a constructed fortification.
That's an oubliette on the right, the corpse was a dorf who fell in on accident. There's a goblin in there too, it's hidden by the mist of the constant-flow prisoner washer.

Z-1, the pool, filter pump, silver vertical bar filter (silver has anti-microbial properties, we strive for cleanliness here)

(That's a ghost chilling in there)

Z-2, the coagulation / flocculation / sedimentation pond:

The longest dorf launch was over halfway up the pond, the shortest barely made it in. Pretty random.

Injuries average one broken limb and 2.5 bruised somethings. No fatalities so far, though the outpost liason got launched in twice and almost drowned when he walked in front of the thing while it was in testing. He was pretty beat up.

There were sounds of some action heard, above the wooden hatch. Deprislava was busy with planting plump helment on her small farm - she finally found wild plump helmet and squezed its juice into stone with empty core - a kind of pot she made for storing her supplies. Let it brew, and use the spawn for more mushrooms.

And suddenly some strange voice roared in her head.
- STOP THAT! - the voice said. She dropped her stick she used as shovel. - YOU SHOULD MAKE A WONDROUS THING! GO NOW!!! - and she rushed to the place where her 'working stones' were stored. That voice sure knows what to do!

- RIGHT! NOW, GO FIND SOME STONE! - She took the nearest boulder. - MORE! - She took another. - MORE! - And the third. - AND METAL BAR!!!
Deprislava looked around. No metal in sight.
- METAL BAR! - roared the voice. - YOU NEED METAL!!! METAL!!! METAAAAAAL!!!!!!!
That roar was driving her insane. But no matter what there were NO metal bars at all!

((OOC: Well, suggestions? Shoud we let her go insane or give her the bar?
Also, I accidentally closed DF with previous sanitary tube testing, had to repeat it, this time I removed the second minecart. No real difference were there. Two dead, ~10 injured.

Nice! I like it.

With the very large bathtub landing zone, I ran one dwarf through 20-30 flights with only bruising.
