The Sanitarium. Story and community fort.
« on: February 23, 2013, 06:39:47 am »

Dwarven empires spread, fall, reborn, prosper or drag on a miserabliness, but the only thing remains the same. The Dwarven Madness.
It can has various symptoms - from the uncoverable berserk attack to the compulsive ideas of having a clear glass window at the corner of your room. Sometimes it results in quite curious item made, but it’s still not a close to normality.
So, to study this strange decease an Sanitarium has been built. Actually, not built yet, but will be for sure. Seven brightest psychologists chose the lone island for a clinic where any dwarf can have his treatment, contribute to the medical studies and - we’re sure - get his madness healed!

So far we have a number of possible procedures that can ease the attacks of madness. They are:
•Diet. Raw plants diet, fish diet, non-alcohol diet, diet of special element.
•Labor therapy. Making useful or useless stuff, fulfilling tasks, passing physical tests of whatever purpose.
•Animal therapy. Petting an animal, looking after it, training it. From biggest so smallest ones.
•Nature therapy. Swimming in the open water, breathing the fresh sea air, or to the contrary, spent days in the depths of earth. Having sun baths, or snow baths.
•Shock therapy. A lot of options, but each case should be carefully discussed.
•More to invent!

Each dwarf receives his own chamber, and a proper treatment based on his personality. Every symptom, treatment and so on is put into each dwarf’s medical file.
Fortress population is divided into three categories: Doctors (embark team + a few of migrants), Security and Patients. Contacts between them should be minimized since we can't be sure that madness isn't transmited between dwarves, and every suspicions of madness falling on doctors or security leads to medical investigation and probably putting them under treatment.

First seven dwarves will have various psychology-related skills and diagnostic skill, and are considered to be Doctors. Dwarves with military skills join Security, other are Patients.

Dorfing list:
Doctors:
Security:
Patients:
Children:

You might tweak this idea a bit and have the dwarf psychologists committed to analyzing and re-educating all the goblins they can round up.  Is it possible to mod goblins to be "rehabilitated" into friendly subjects, give them jobs, etc?

This sounds fun.
I'll take a dwarf, preferably a random male named Casser, The Mad One, who has no military skills. He was supposed to be a patient, but decided to be a security officer instead because 'shock therapy' sounded painful.

Everyone added. I didn't think someone can volunteer for Patients, but you guys are even crazier than I could imagine.
So, we embark with 3 docs, 2 guards and 2 patients and see how's going.
Meanwhile, everyone (especially Docs) is welcomed with medical therapy suggestions.

I guess it's possible but requires remodding a huge part of raws, so not this time.

As for therapy suggestions, how about bloodshower therapy? Have a setup like this:
Code: [Select]
WWW
WSW
WGW
WBW
WDW
W: wall
S: menacing spikes, set to repeat somehow.
G: wall grate/bars
B: bed
D: door (or more bedroom, I guess)

An elf/goblin/cheesemaker is dumped onto the menacing spikes from above, and is shredded, showering the patient in blood!

When you have migrants, please reserve me a dorf as a security guard, named Nix.  Preferably with a massive mace.

1st Granite 223.
Our raft has reached the shore of lone island in the Gulf of Oils. Island looks quite bright - red desert called The Cerulean Dunes, and The Crewed Plains full of grass. It's the great place where poor dwarves can rest and heal.
So, here the Crystalcleaned, teh Sanctuary should be built!
Three of us are the core of medical crew, while two others are guards and two - first our patients.
First thing we do should do is to open medical files for each of us. Yes, even the Doctors themself should be examined from time to time - The Dwarven Madness has no pity!
So, first files are:
Peregar
Brother Cerebrum
Archmage Joe

Vendix
Casser

Deprislava Sodelakun
Litlbear
((OOC: These are GoogleDocs links, so any doctor can add his notes. Actually, anyone can edit, but please don't turn it into mess.
Let's set the rule - evertone who edits them signes it with his dwarf name))

Well, after first bit of paperwork was done, Deprislava were ordered to dig us some place to live, while Litlbear weas sent to cut trees. Guards share their stories, while we medics gathered to discuss the hospital layout and treatments we can provide.

All new patients should spend a month in partially submerged chambers to get rid of all diseases and dirt.
As for therapy suggestions, how about bloodshower therapy? Have a setup like this:

7th Slate.
The meeting on the shore.
Peregar:
- So, colleagues, after we've settled (or rather have not) on origin of The dwarven Madness, should we discuss way we'll treat our patients? The list we have here is far from completeness... actually, it comes from one prison guard captain. He tried to apply them on his prisoners, and got some results... Unfortunately he's been hammered for embezzlement, extorsions, bribes and such, but that's not the topic now.
Brother Cerebrum:
- Well. First of all - I insist! - we should be sure that our Sanctuary is kept clean from all diseases, that could possibly lead to madness attack. That means - strict sanitaric rules. What should be done is a massive cleaning bath for every migrant we have here. Also, some smaller baths should be put everywhere in the fortress. That is the primary orders that should be done as soon as possible.

Casser, carrying the squid he caught at the sea:
- You should definitely try bloodbaths! You know, when a blood spurt from someone's fresh wound and covers you all over - it's such a refresing feeling!... Uh, what? Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt you.
All three Docs with strange look on their faces follow Casser with their eyes
Archmage Joe: - But you know... even this could help.

Other news - we (Deprislava, I mean) hit the microcline and is carving the halls for us. I'm not sure if we should set the dormitory underground or aboveground, but let's things go as they do.
Litlbear clear-cut most of the trees and now is making beds for all of us. The beds are kind of rude but we need something to sleep on.
Casser and Vendix are busy with fishing. None cleans all fish they capture, but they bring more and more.
