What is it with the ponies?
« on: February 22, 2013, 12:49:54 pm »

I keep looking for something interesting to read on the Community Games forum and I keep running into these repugnant "My Little Pony" modded games.  What is it with you people?  The idea of "doing X to be ironic" was already a tired joke when teenagers in the 1990s started wearing trucker caps.  What does this say about the state of our civilization?  What will your children  and grandchildren think of you?

Err

1) Don't be a dick
2) Pony discussion is forbidden for, well, for good reasons.

When you grow up, you tend to stop caring about what other people think is mature behaviour.  I think the whole brony thing is pretty pathetic too, but then I play D&D, sing along to cheesy music from the 80s, and occasionally laugh at well-timed farts, so who am I to judge?

heyheyhey!
There's nothing immature or strange about D&D. That's pretty goddamn fun stuff.
I'd agree that it is strange to have any interest whatsoever in a show about tiny horses, but on these forums, you're not aloud to whine about others' decisions. Unless their decision was to punch you in the face or something; that'd be a reason to chat with the sheriff.

For the past 20 minutes I'm trying to write something that makes sense. Like OP, I have no clue what's up with the whole ponie thing. I guess if people want to call themselves "bronies" who are we stop them? As far as I know they are not harming anyone.
But when I think about adults having some kind of weird fascination over little talking horses... you are not alone OP.

Better question, OP:

Why do you care?

It has nothing to do with you.  Nobody is breaking into your house and tying you down and forcing you to watch/download/mod/whatthefuckever.  You want to show off your alleged maturity in the matter?  Shut the hell up.  Ignore it.  They've done nothing to you and their choice of entertainment is not cause for you to snipe at them.

As a Brony, let me try and explain why I like MLP:FiM so much.

It is a good show, and I don't buy into the whole, "If it looks girly, a man must hate it." Its sexism, so in a way... IDK, I'm fighting sexism by challenging Gender Steriotypes. (I guess.)

Ah screw it. I like the show, and I don't force it down people's throats. I'd ask that you give us the same courtesy, OP. We don't force you to click those topics, nor read the posts within.

i agree with OP completely.  if they want their ponies, they should take them somewhere else.  i'm so tired of seeing it in the community forts.

I'm amazed at the number of people responding who:
(A) ...think the pony-modders are expressing a sincerely-held, deep-rooted preference/inclination/whatever, and
(B) ...think I'm being cruel and bigoted toward these poor, misunderstood souls.

Chill out. The pony thing is obviously people being intentionally ridiculous (that hipster "irony" thing), and my "grouchy old man" post is also meant to be light-hearted.  Now, get off my lawn.

Maybe they're being ironic without knowing that they are being ironic-

They say that parody is the #1 thing that High Schoolers can't recognize these days.

I blame all mainstream things for consisting of a myriad of clichés that would constitute a parody if they were not being presented with a straight face.

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

This thread makes my head hurt...

Some people watch the show because it's a good show and they like it. It has nothing to do with irony, it's just a good show. Not sure why you care, though.

Believe it or not, this thread isn't about what people do behind closed doors.

It's not an irony thing.
It's people enjoying a good show.
