He's openly contemplating killing himself. If you don't consider it that serious, allow me to reassure you that it is in fact That Serious.

But I am aware of how serious it is. I'm not saying that I won't suggest he visits a therapist because it's not that serious, but that I'm worried about if he'll actually go when I do try to tell him. I'm not, for a minute, downplaying the situation.

Quote
If he has clinical depression, and as far as I can tell it sounds like he does, staying content with his life is something he is not going to be able to do. Be it a neurochemical imbalance or some kind of psychological damage, something is wrong with him. You yourself said he never acts like this.

I agree.. I just meant that I hope he can hang on until then.

Do you think I should immediately suggest him to a therapist, or wait until the situation calls for it? He seems okay, now, but I don't know for how long.

It might be better to bring up the subject diplomatically now rather than when he's in a worse state of mind.

He might seem alright, but you aren't inside his head, so there's no telling. It is not impossible that he's alright, but it is also not impossible that he is trying to seem normal to you so you won't confront him about it again. I'd be as quick about this as possible. The sooner he gets some help the less time he'll have to contemplate suicide.

Okay, I'll do it ASAP. Wish me luck.

(If he would only respond to my messages. Usually when I try to talk to him, he responds several hours later, even days. It will be dragged out much longer than I would want.)

Good luck.  It's definitely best to do it now.

Then his college will likely have free or cheap mental health services available to students, and he's in the prime age for developing the Really Fucking Serious mental illnesses.  If you can, help him find university health services on the college webpage and convince him to go.

Alright, but .. I'm a little confused. How would you do just this?

He's already been taking therapy.

He told me that he's already hired professional therapists, even christian ones. He also told me they've only presented temporary solutions. He listened to me, and said that he was feeling better than he was yesterday, but that he saw my point.

What does the therapist's religion have to do with anything?

Hopefully they'll sway him, but he should be aware he can change therapists if he doesn't like the one he has.

Well, other than the fact that their religion is his own, maybe that they can relate better?

The value of a therapist is in their skill in dealing with mental illness, regardless of their similarities to the patient.

I'm aware, I only noted that because it's what he told me, and he made it sound significant enough to be worth mentioning.

Also, in his own words,

I don't think that's really true for a lot of people who are, say, dealing with hate-crime-related PTSD or similar.  Though I doubt you were contesting that, I wanted to clarify.

Depression is a nasty condition. People who seem perfectly happy with their lives but suddenly contemplate diving off a bridge are generally sure candidates.

I'd suggest talking to him. People with depression are often paranoid that someone will find out how they feel and brand them a looney, so they keep their true feelings hidden away, carefully avoiding the topic as much as possible. Talking about it with someone they trust does help.

If he really wants to end it all, there's very little anyone can do. Just hope that you can be there for him before it gets that far.

That's exactly what he's acting like! He's told me himself that he's paranoid of just that, but only told me once. I had a serious sit-down with him, after that.. and then had a more care-free conversation with him, and he cheered up. Didn't bring it up again, but still. It was nice seeing him happy after seeing him in such a mopey mood for so long.

I'm trying my best. After all, this isn't the first time I've dealt with suicidal and/or deeply depressed people.

P.S
Thank you, everyone, who's taken the time to give me advice, and feedback. You've all helped me, and I can't help but thank you enough.

Thank you for all. I'm little bit like your friend and I've gained some helpful small ideas from this thread.
