Using chik-fil-a mentioned earlier. They give to a "non-profit" that was pushing for the death penalty for homosexuality in either nigeria or uganda. Laws did end up getting passed making it a crime and leading to imprisonment.

I think it's really a matter of deciding how much you actually want those waffle fries. But you are taking a stand with your purchase one way or the other.

oh! well in that case, giving a convicted rapist a cartoon show sounds much more reasonable. >__>

None of the aliens were racism, guys. They were aliens shown to be Greater Than Man and to tap into that innate fear that maybe, just maybe, we -aren't- the center of the universe.

But that one story about the reanimator was racist as hell.

I think it's more the underlying 'fear of the unknown' or the inherent un-human-ness of his monsters, and the fact that these feelings may have stemmed from/were inspired by his fear of other people/races.

I always found that the xenophobic worldview of Lovecraft's characters worked really well when they lost their minds due to encounters with actual aliens, as it rather highlights why that encounter would be so very traumatic for them. Also, a lot of the stories are framed such that the narrator is describing the horrible thing that happened to him after the fact, leaving the question open whether that character's ingrained racism was inflamed before the incident, or as a consequence of their mind fracturing.

I know I've heard people say they don't like Lovecraft because of the racism, but I find it hard to disagree with a story which suggests that racism is the product of a damaged mind.

Personally, I'll support art up to the point where it enriches someone who will use that wealth for something I don't approve of. Products are a little harder to justify that because so many more people make their livelihood from it. But the line also exists there somewhere too.

I don't exactly give HP Lovecraft a pass, but, he was writing in a very common style for his time. He didn't have a corner on racism or fear of the darkie by any extent of the imagination....and if you subtract out the mystic/magical/occult elements of their behavior, his treatment of them was (comparatively) mild. I equate his racism and his prose to the same general time period. And it's worth noting that toward the end of his life, he did somewhat repent on his racial ideology.
+1, pretty much. Sure, by today's standards some of his characters are unnecessary racially stereotypical, to say the least, and we should be aware of such things and disapprove of them. But he was more of a product of his time than a truly evil man.

... Uhhhh, so, back on topic now - any of you guys/gals play Adventure Time Battle Party?

Because PB wants them this way, of course.

How else would she stay dictator for (hundreds? Thousands?) of years over the same population without violently killing half of them?

More like driving everyone bananas crazy and remaining the only distantly sane.

EDIT: Or both.

The intelligence of her own people sort of goes up and down. Though yeah stupidity is rather common.

As well remember that they have been pretty much provided for by PB to the extent where they can have hobbies but for the most part they don't have to work, be productive, or really think because PB has been so obsessed that she has sort of planned out their lives.

She hasn't really groomed them to be able to take care of themselves.
