Mysoginy?

But more importantly, People will take the influence they've gotten from their stuff and use it for all kinds of things.
I'd just like to believe that for every Skyler Page, there's a Sasha Grey.

Yeah, he's a banned spammer. Normally we'd delete this thread too, but people were having too much fun with it by the time we got here.

No... just hints.

Like... You read "Mountains of Madness" and suddenly you are trying to see where his anti-Semitism influenced his writing. (It actually did, interestingly enough... and the weird thing... It actually improved his writing)

I didn't even know H. P. Lovecraft was anti-Semitic, I just knew he was a raging racist against blacks. I guess he was just racist all around.

How would that make his writing any better, though?!

He was pretty much racist & discriminative of everyone - arabs, turks, hillbillies etc. it was a big part of his style of writing. Most of the baddies were slanty-eyed turks or inbred small town American's. I'm not sure "better" is the right word but his whole style of writing is pretty dependent on seeing other cultures in a certain light.....

Eh, I can still enjoy classical novels that aren't up to modern social par, I don't let artists' weird criminal records bother me either (although it's fun to watch some scene and be like, "geez, this takes on a different meaning after so-and-so's sexual harassment case huh?"). For instance, you know this song? You probably do. You may or may not know about Rick James' kidnapping charges. That's... like, I don't want to downplay any sexual harassment, but that's really above and beyond groping right there. I can still listen to the song when it comes on the radio.

For me the art stands on it's own merits. If they're a criminal they can pay the price in the courts/jail. If they're a horrible person they can pay the price that has on your life. If it's a good book/movie/song I'll still read/watch/listen to it.

I mean in how he wrote aliens.

His description of their "Otherness" is rather haunting in the books and it isn't a stretch that his racism/anti-Semitism likely inspired some of those descriptions.

So all in all... I just don't want to know if Adventure Time's creator turns out to fund terrorist cells.

I've seen Lovecraft being accused of being racist but Old Ones being a product of antisemitism?... Seems a bit far-fetched, no offense.

None of the aliens were racism, guys. They were aliens shown to be Greater Than Man and to tap into that innate fear that maybe, just maybe, we -aren't- the center of the universe.

But that one story about the reanimator was racist as hell.

I think it's more the underlying 'fear of the unknown' or the inherent un-human-ness of his monsters, and the fact that these feelings may have stemmed from/were inspired by his fear of other people/races.

If you have a problem supporting rapists, your ignorance means you might be doing that on accident. That's not a good thing.

If you don't then your ignorance doesn't matter.

I am one of those people who believes that works of art stand on their own legs independent of what the artist does or says, and that an artist independent of what they do deserves the fruits of their time and effort.

So if it turned out that the creator of Adventure time, for example, was a Neo Nazi... I'd have no problem with that.

I just don't want my experience of Adventure Time to be tainted by that knowledge, especially since as far as Adventure time is concerned it is completely unchanged.

One small potential problem with this kind of mindset: if you are enjoying this art in a way that benefits the producer (eg watching it on tv, buying the book) then you could be supporting a person who might not be the nicest person around.

For comparison: if you found out your local bakery gave parts of his revenue to fund a hate group or something, one could refuse to keep shopping there so as not to (indirectly) support something awful that way.

kindapping charges aren't the problem for RIck James, it was kidnapping a woman and raping her for 3 days straight that was the problem lol

That kinda ties into the Chick-fil-a deal.

Personally, I'll support art up to the point where it enriches someone who will use that wealth for something I don't approve of. Products are a little harder to justify that because so many more people make their livelihood from it. But the line also exists there somewhere too.

I don't exactly give HP Lovecraft a pass, but, he was writing in a very common style for his time. He didn't have a corner on racism or fear of the darkie by any extent of the imagination....and if you subtract out the mystic/magical/occult elements of their behavior, his treatment of them was (comparatively) mild. I equate his racism and his prose to the same general time period. And it's worth noting that toward the end of his life, he did somewhat repent on his racial ideology.

no he was especially racist.

The reanimator is a good example.

Poe I would say, though there are stories he has that have racist elements, was more mainstream in it for his time, Lovecraft was maliciously racist.

I love H P Lovecraft, and I play Call of Cthulhu almost exclusively for ttrpgs. I wouldn't if he were alive, though.

....lol, indeed?

yea, it started when he thought she stole some of his drugs. Then Dave Chapelle somehow made him all glorified again.

It's like Tyson having a kid's cartoon show. WTF
