It is probably because Marceline is a "Goth" type character because... her personality is a bit goth-like.

She isn't trying to channel depths that aren't there. She can be pretty much a downer but most of the time she isn't. Whenever she is smarmy it is justified.

As well her personality doesn't start and end with her appearance. It was actually one of the points of her character is that she does have aspects of herself that are sweet and that is kind.

Not to mention she isn't over the top.

I think it's more that I enjoy her sarcastic but still chill and laid-back personality, which is totally not my experience of "goth" types. Also, I guess I don't consider her "goth" at all, because, you know, she's a vampire. Goth-types to me are typical human kids who are using darkness and a fantasy of an imagined "underworld" to deal with the teenager nonsense that we all had to go through. Marceline is a thousand-year-old vampire queen who can turn into a demon. Yet she chooses to hang out and play bass. I find it kind of fun how the typical teenage-y angst-y emotional stuff is juxtaposed over the fact that she's this immortal demon thing. "Daddy, why did you eat my fries..."

I don't think I have any idea of the point I was trying to make. Just that I love how everything in Adventure Time seems to fall together so perfectly, I guess. I wouldn't typically watch a show, of any type, about an angsty goth teenage girl. But if you take that idea and make it an element in a far more complex character whose dad is always trying to steal her freinds' souls on a show about a post-apocalyptic magic-land with candy-people, well, who could not love that?

EDIT: Also, B-MOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yippie Kai Yai YEY!!!!!

Pnx

I was walking around my kitchen making breakfast this morning singing "I'm just your problem" and "Daddy." So smooth.

Kind of interesting how the view of Princess Bubblegum has changed so dramatically between the first and last seasons.

So uh. I think Food Chain is one of my favorite episodes. Man I love Magic Man.

Food Chain was made for people who watch Adventure Time on drugs. I refuse to believe anything to the contrary.

I thought it was a parody of some educational films. Especially considering the art style shift.

I thought 'Food Chain' was a drop in quality in favor of quantity of episodes.

Food Chain was a guest episode directed, written and storyboarded by Masaaki Yuasa, who is apparently a notable creator in the world of anime. That's why the story was so strange and animated so oddly.

What is interesting is that I'd probably feel the same way.

Whenever I am the center of attention it feels incredibly stressful.
