Ringception
« on: February 21, 2013, 11:05:44 pm »

So I was minding my own business, playing dwarf mode, when one of my dwarfs gets a fey mood. He gets everything he needs, so I don't think anything of it, other than looking forward to the description of another artifact. And then he completed it, and I got this:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Has anyone else experienced this? Or should I lock this dwarf up before he spreads his insanity to the other dwarfs and begins a cult based on this thing?

Image missing, but I assume you got an artifact with a picture of itself.

This is normal, if not common: Artifacts are valid items of history to be depicted in decorations, and decorations on artifacts aren't decided until the artifact is "made", resulting in the artifact being on the list of valid images for its own decorations.  It happens especially commonly for the first few artifacts in worlds with short/no history, since the other options for decorating are minimal.

Even better when it refers to it's own creation.  :P
That doesn't happen often.

Why are 30% (I kept tally) of all of my artifacts self-referential then?

IIRC some guy on these forums had an artifact with a picture of another artifact that was made AFTER the first one. So yeah, the decorations aren't decided until you look at them, sort of like Schrödinger's cat.

Said guy was me. The thread derailed into a physics discussion after I made a bad joke.

Technically the description of an artifact isn't solidified until you look at the description screen for the first time. This can result in artifacts having images of artifacts that were made after they were (so for example if a ring is made in 250, but the description isn't looked at until 255, it could have an image of a sword made in 253, 3 years after the ring was made).

That guy? He was me. I got the artifacts with pictures of each other. It may have been due to decoration after creation, however. Does that happen?

Why is it that when recursive patterns are found people add -ception as a humorous suffix? Inception was about the implanting of an idea and existentialism. It wasn't called recursion.

Anyways, carry on citizens.

So it's normal? The odd thing is though, this ISN'T a short history. I intentionally ran it until year 1050, so perhaps there are some more variables we don't know about in event selection when it comes to artifact generation. There certainly seems to be a trend of events relating to your civilization being chosen, and perhaps recent events have a better chance as well. I suppose the most likely explanation is that what's on the artifact is dependent upon the dwarf that made it. That would explain the trend of events relating to your civilization and even your fort, and since making an artifact is extremely significant, especially for the creator, it would probably value higher than other events.

Dream within a dream? Artifact within an artifact?

But yet neither were original concepts, both have existed for as long as humanity has dreamed. Seems peculiar.

Putting this thread back on the tracks, I think it's interesting that two different people said they had artifacts with pictures of each other.
