DoomRL is awesome for sure but its turn based, although probably the most actiony turn based game I have ever played. I even set xpadder up so I can play it with a gamepad.

And just saw the trailer for 99 Level to Hell. That looks super awesome. So glad this genre seems to be taking off. I wonder what other mechanics can be explored to keep things fresh for games like these. Certainly multiplayer would be cool.

I can't stop playing this game and it's only in early alpha. My greatest achievement so far...

...notice the difficulty meter on the top right  :/

Shoot First- one of my all time fav games, this one is horribly overlooked/underrated and is a top down shooter

Now I've gotta reinstall that, thanks.

OhboyhowcouldIforgetaboutthisgame.

Brb going to die horribly and raegquit after the fifth level.

You should try Risk of Rain. It's actually very similar to Shoot First in a lot of ways except it's sidescrolling and not top-down.  I'm having stupid fun with it right now.

A lot of games get put under roguelike or roguelike-like these days but I never understood why FTL was lumped in. FTL is more of a strategy/sim, it's nothing like a roguelike really but it's a cool game. Also I'm talking action-roguelikes and there isn't much action in FTL   :P

Well, roguelike gets labelled on a lot of things these days, but FTL does have several elements of it, probably enough to get called as such. The most agreed upon definition is the Berlin Interpretation. Let's list the high value factors :
-Random environment generation : Yes
-Permadeath : Yes
-Turn-based : Not really, more like pseudo turn-based, like Infinity engine based game for example.
-Grid-based No.
-Non-modal : No (but modern roguelikes usually aren't)
-Complexity : Although it's not THAT complex, I'd say yes.
-Resource management : Definitely.
-Hack'n'slash : Debatable, you kinda go from combat to combat.
-Exploration and discovery : Yes.

To be fair, a lot of classic roguelikes aren't really turn-based either. Instead, how often you and the monsters move depend on everyone's speed or agility or what have you, so a faster character can potentially do more actions in the time it takes a slower character to perform one.

Yeah, spam the hell out of your speed stat and then become invincible in some games.

Yeah, I can't stop playing it. At first I thought it was too hard and I died all the time at the first boss. But now after I got the idea and into the flow of it I can make it to the 4th stage. Which is just the 3rd stage but harder and you have to fight like 8 bosses at the same time, plus about 100 mobs. I really hope the devs decide to go all the way with this one and add a ton more content(which I think is the plan) It has cult classic potential I think.

If you don't mind console games, I'd definitely call Baroque an action roguelike. It's a third-or-first-person (you choose) action game where you're killing enemies on randomly generated floors on a tower, and it has an extremely roguelike-like item system (loads and loads of items, identification, very limited inventory space). It doesn't have permadeath but it works a similar concept in: When you die you lose all your items and are reset to level 1, but dying (or winning) repeatedly is required to advance the story.

It got a lot of bad reviews for being a hard and roguelike-y game on the Wii (and PS2) which apparently bothered people. YMMV on the gameplay, though I've always been a fan of its extremely weird setting and style.

Would ToeJam & Earl for the Mega Drive count? It's a top down action adventure which was greatly inspired by the original rogue.

The randomly generated levels are set out like floating islands, each being higher up than the previous. You get between them using elevators. You collect presents with different wrapping paper which work like the different colour potions of rouge. Some give benefits when opened and others the opposite, but you won't know until you try them as they are randomised each new game.
