World War 2 Online - F2P 1940's Planetside, but more hardcore.

http://www.battlegroundeurope.com/

Set in World War II Western Europe, WWII Online: Battleground Europe is a brutally realistic MMO featuring hundreds of towns and cities in a huge, zone-less map where battles rage for days and campaigns for weeks.  Choose to fight alongside the axis or allies against thousands of players and advance your character rank to unlock equipment and permissions.  With over 100 weapons and vehicles accurately modeled and utilizing military-grade physics, every soldier can make a measurable contribution in the battle for victory!

Their playbase is small (in comparison to the game's scale), but has started growing quite quickly since they became free to play.

I haven't actually played it yet (making my account today), but i've watched some gameplay videos and it seems like a lot of fun. I will probably be a pilot :3

If I remember correctly, by F2P they mean. "Here, you can be a rifleman for free. Anything else you need a subscription for and that includes driving almost anything."

This is still around?  I remember playing a trial of this many years ago.  I got into a tank, sat and looked at the controls for about three minutes, then got out and walked.

Well i can't play it because my PC sucks but i decided to look at the F2P limitations anyway.

So...

Infantry...

The basic (free) account let's you play as a most basic rifleman or submachine gunner.
Everything above that is for paying customers only.

A 10$ (basic) account gives you acces to mortar grenadier and LMG classes as well as airbourne riflemen and SMG.

And the 18$ account gives acces to everything including upgraded (semi auto or scoped) riflemen AT rockets AT rifles and airborne mortar, AT rifle, LMG, sniper classes.

Well... the situation for free players look a bit grim.

Now the vehicles...

Things here look far better as players get a somewhat wide selection of vehicles to drive but obviously the heavy tanks and better/spacialized planes are restricted to paying people (free people are almost always limited to fighters it seems but i'm not a specialist on aircraft).
And there is a "availbility" limit in place so you can be almost sure the better F2P vehicles will be nearly always taken.

*Plucks out her marker and discards a perfectly good binder divider.*

There should already be a thread on this, probably under Battleground Europe. We once had a bay12 squad I believe.

Is it one-time payment or a subscription model? I couldn't find any information on their site, and the former wouldn't be terribly unreasonable.

Although the F2P game is somewhat limited in terms of classes, the game is still very fun. I suggest at least giving it a try, the community was pretty friendly when I played seeing as it was full of people who have been playing the game for years.

It's a subscription. This is right up my alley, but I've never payed subscriptions for a game, and I'm not going to start now :(

I heard the pilot community was pretty hardcore as well :)

Trust me, they're very hardcore. Most of the veteran pilots have been playing flight simulators ever since it came out, and there's no way you could compete against other pilots unless you used some kind of joystick.

Don't blame the tools, blame the pilot ;) Though yes, a joystick is a bare minimum!
