The minimum wage is a miniscule step in the right direction, but it's essentially a band-aid that doesn't deal with the underlying problem: that people have to sell their labour to survive instead of having the ability to work and enjoy the benefits of that work without being ripped off and having their successes expropriated by the people exploiting them. Better to put control of the means of production in the hands of all people.

Does the US have different minimum wages per age bracket? For example, the minimum wage for somebody under sixteen in Australia is $5.87.
For anybody twenty or over it is $15.59, and there are several brackets in between those two figures.

Could somebody over the age of twenty be working for less than $10 an hour?

Ha, no. Not that I'm aware of, anyway. Minimum wage is minimum wage if you're sixteen, twenty six, or sixty.

No.

Yes. Some jobs, like restaurant serving, are exempt from minimum wage so long as the server gets enough money in tips to match or exceed what they would have gotten in minimum wage. Some serving jobs thus pay as little as 2$ an hour.

You are technically entitled to ask for the difference in compensation if your tips don't match what you would have gotten in minimum wage, but in practice this gets you one full paycheck and then fired.

Well there's your problem.
Forget a 30% increase, you need to drop the minimum wage for the youngsters and increase the fuck out of it for adults.

In Ontario, there's something called "Student wage" that's a fair bit lower than minimum wage. There's one in BC too as I recall, and probably most other provinces.

Dropping the minimum wage for younger people would probably help the youth unemployment rate, giving more people more work experience, too.

Lower than the $7.25 wage?
Wait, why is it exactly $7.25? Seems very round. We get ours adjusted annually to match the strength of the dollar, you guys get the same, right? Otherwise not only are you getting fucked, but getting fucked progressively harder with each year.

That's crazy. You want to take money away from the people with the least of it?

You haven't read the thread, I'm guessing. The whole thing of Obama's proposal is that it would also index minimum wage to the dollar.

Under 16s have the least need for it. The assumption is that they either have parents paying for their food and shelter, or they are already on some sort of benifit scheme. That $5 an hour goes towards buying nerf guns and candy.

So this isn't currently happening...
Oh US of A, really? Come now, next thing you will be telling me there is no public health care.

Max, there are lots of families in the US where the non-adult children work to support the family with their money.

Anyway, if you're under 16 in the US and working, you are either 15 and working with your parent's explicit permission in a job that was probably not applied to by anyone older then you, 14 and working an informal low-paying thing like dog walking, or breaking child labor laws if you are any younger.

Closest was the time Nixon tried to set it up. After Watergate public heath care in the US became a dream.

Ok that is the other thing you need then. Subsidize low income families so that this isn't a major factor.

At the rate we're going now, it's looking like the entire wellfare system we have needs to be rebuilt from step 1.
