Bookkeeper Won't Keep Books
« on: February 20, 2013, 11:37:05 pm »

So my bookkeeper simply refuses to do the job he only exists to do. At first I thought it was because of his priorities but even after turning off literally every labor for him he still refuses to do so. I have provided him with an office and nothing but this one thing to do but he refuses to do it. He is the only Dwarf with any skills as a bookkeeper so I really need to fix this.

Bookkeepers are the only noble that have settings to be adjusted. If you look on the (N)obles screen, I believe there is a (S)ettings or something along those lines highlighted when you select the bookkeeper. By default its set to "low accuracy" so it only counts to the 10ths place. Higher settings count further up to "highest accuracy" which is perfect counts. This will take a while if they are inexperienced though, so if your bookkeeper is not the best, or if you just dont have many items, set them to a lower setting.

You seem to be under the impression that we're playing some game other than dwarf fortress. It doesn't matter how powerful you make a creature, we will find a way to destroy it. God is dead, and Urist killed him.

Thanks, didn't realize the settings thing.

Is there actually a reason to use lower precisions?  I always bump it up to highest settings, and even stone gets properly inventoried after a season.

I often use the medium setting until the first or second migrant wave. I don't have enough stuff to need the higher setting, and I've got other things I need done.

Yeah, early on i don't need the precision, but i can use that dwarf's hands to get my fort started. I start out with medium precision and ramp it up when i need more. In forts with low population, 'high' precision can actually be enough for all practical purposes - it gives precise counts up to 10 000 for items, up to 1 Million for fort value; it doesn't really matter much if that count is off by five dwarfbucks.

In the beginning, I have my bookkeeper and broker as the same dwarf, and I usually have to lower the precision for him to stop counting and trade with the first set of merchants.  Once the trade is done, I crank it back up and it is never an issue again.

I will run the experiment to completion anyway, however. Even if the only reason why there is a punctured equilibrium in the fortress is because I have been brutally butchering babies
EDIT: I just remembered that dwarves can't equip halberds. That might explain why the squads that use them always die.
