Learning ye olde art of thine acoustic guitar!
« on: February 20, 2013, 08:03:28 pm »

Well, I finally picked up an instrument and stuck with it, the noble & bardic guitar. Turns out im a purty good 'guitar-learner' or whatevs, anyways I wanted know (before I result to hours-long google searches) if anyone knew some easier songs that are... Bardly... I guess, I mean some good songs to play for friends, I want that 'Ye Olde Pub' feel! Power and Barre chords all cool, im also not afraid to go a little outside my skill level.

Not really sure if this'd be better off in Gen discussion, but its meh life and Im kinda asking for advice. So...

Anyways, all help/suggestions greatly appreciated, thx.

I have nothing to contribute except that you should find some people to play DnD with and annoy the fuck out of them by playing bardic song for every little thing you do.

I dunno if you want actually authentic music, but I have a few recommendations that are pretty easy.

First is Branle Anglais which is a really easy little piece that sounds good. Tab

Another is Spagnoletta which is a bit more difficult and might not actually sound good unless you have a nylon string guitar. Tab

And finally, my favorite of the three, Branle Gay which is an impressive sounding little piece and is probably the most difficult to play. Tab

Feel free to play those at higher tempos than the videos, especially Branle Gay and Spagnoletta, if you feel comfortable with it.

For more modern stuff Pink Floyd's Is There Anybody Out There is easy to play and impresses everybody, it's a song I think every guitarist should know. The Beatles Julia is a bit more difficult to play, but it's absolutely beautiful, helps you work on your rhythm, and has some nice stretches in it. Finally, if you're up for a bit of a challenge, Bert Jansch's Rosemary Lane is a wonderful song that really stresses the rhythm and has some chord changes at interesting spots and a really nice bassline.

No using. That's not what freedom is for.

Acoustic, you say? I do play it too. Of the fun things to learn, albeit quite difficult technically, Swing 42 by Django Reinhardt. I blame first Mafia's soundtrack for my attraction to it. The main theme is quite easy, though requires some speed.

A lot of things played with fingerstyle sound wonderful and bardish. Simply playing a progression over Cmaj chord sounds rustic.

I recommend you check out some of Blind Guardian's stuff. Skalds and Shadows, The Bard's Song (If that ain't bardic enough for you, I got nothin'), and Past and Future Secret, particularly.

True Story: the 'ye' you see on olde english signs is actually just the word 'the'.  But because they didn't have the proper letter called 'thorn' for their printing presses, they used a 'y' which looked similar.

OK, I have to reload the save.
There was a bit of a problem regarding flashfreezing, a ballistae, and a barrel of dwarven ale. Gonna fix it up.

The acoustic rhythm guitar in Voice of the Soul by Death sounds fantastic and is fairly simple to learn, technique-wise. Once you figure out how to tune down to D, at least. dunno if you want to learn by ear or by tabs, by ear it can be kinda slow for beginners...or at least slow for me.  :P

Blind Guardian is also great, yeah. The Bard's Song is, well, bardy.

Iced Earth's Solitude is another example of a great sounding yet fairly simple song to learn. Many of their "metal songs" also implement wonderful sounding acoustic intros, such as When the Night Falls, A Question of Heaven, Dracula, and Melancholy, to name a few. Iced Earth is almost always tuned a half step down from standard to Eb tuning.

I'd also recommend Buckethead's acoustic stuff. Angel Monster has a great acoustic rhythm guitar.
