You'll need to set up BYOND, the system all ss13 servers run on first. Check any of the server  wikis and there should be a section on this

Would it be bad taste to advertise an up and coming server in this thread? My friend, who has quite a bit of experience with administration, wants to start one up for discontent players, and I'd like to see where I can find them.

Let's be brutally honest; advertising in this thread is a terrible idea.  No one looks here, we're hundreds of versions out of date, and this server rarely ever gets people anymore; even when we do, it's like one or two people on-line. It'd be hard to find a worse place to advertise.

Thank you for the heads up. I just have no idea where to start with advertisement. I find that SS13 communities that I typically visited have been completely dead, and the game seemingly has been more and more polarized between "do nothing and lynch everyone" and "banned for griefing for running too fast in the hallways" servers.

I'd appreciate the Discord, but it may be a couple weeks before the server is up and stable.

Well good luck to you.  I liked how Urist McStation is/was run for the most part, or at least did when I played.  I found the same thing about other servers, either it's a grief fest, or an arbitrary rules enforcement simulator. 

The problem, I think, is that each server is a small community. They get more and more insular, so since they all agree on the same extreme ideas, they don't seem so extreme to them.  The people who don't like it leave or get kicked out.
