If the virologist does his job right, nobody actually notices. If he doesn't do it quite as right, everyone hates him.
It's a thankless job. Unless a viral outbreak occurs. Then the virologist gets to actually do something that people give a shit about, namely cure the disease.
Cures are usually handled by Chemistry.
Except from what I've seen, the kind of cures that are listed on a medical scanner takes awhile to actually cure you (I think?). Vaccines created by the virologist cure instantly.
Whenever I've seen a virus outbreak, it's almost always cured by chemistry, even if there's a virologist. So you just end up with everyone on the station hanging around medbay eating chemicals. All you have to do is cure one person, draw their blood, then make vaccines from that blood, right?
Does the CMO have virology access?
I don't see why he wouldn't, it's not a medbay/research hybrid.
Also, there's a weird bug. I was traitor virologist and the round was ending, there were only 3 people at round start and this was before scaling was fixed. Another traitor announces something suspicious over the radio, so I launch my codewords and he comes to my lab, turns out he did my objective for me. I go "fuck it" and quickly mix up my aquired symptoms of Weight Gain, Sneezing and Headache. The only problem here is that it didn't have airborn spread. This made me rage very much, I was looking forward to fat station 13.
E: Also, if you put a disease syringe in a syringe gun and fire it at someone, I don't think it spreads the disease.
