I've got a new headcanon explanation for things that I like better than the alternate universes one.

Everyone is clones. When someone doesn't make it back from the station, they're cloned from a backup at Centcomm. Relationships persist between shifts because people remember some of the ones where they made and interacted with friends and enemies. When something heavily antag-related (a nuke team, aliums, blob, cult, traitors not stealthing it perfectly, etc.) goes on, everyone who escapes is sanitized (read: murdered) and cloned from the backup, which is why nobody except the Captain has any IC knowledge of antags beyond the super-common ones like carp and spiders. The only rounds our characters remember are the ones where nothing extraordinary happened (and which they survived). "Ordinary" includes things like Singuloth escaping, naturally.

Antags break down like this: Traitors and nuke ops are caused by a rival company/the syndies subverting the cloning process, making the next you loyal to them instead of Centcomm. Changeling rounds are ones where your clone was nommed by a ling before the start of the shift, and you play as the ling mimicking you. Alium, wizzerd, Spiderclan antags are wholly unrelated to your normal character, who just didn't show up to the shift for one reason or another.

You're making it too complicated. The more steps involved, the more likely something will go wrong. It's simple, we kill the wizard.
