What should I know first?

I very very rarely play, but there are lots of new game modes. Judging by the recent swell in population[Its averaging ~20ish when it could barely get to 10 a while back] and posts here, it seems like a fun time overall.

It's been almost two years since I last played, and I'm thinking I want to take another shot at it. What should I know first?
The most important things I can think of are A) B BORG, BEST BORG is currently still active and B) We have like three engines but two are fused together

Whenever I try to log into the server, Byond freezes up and gives the old Not Responding. What am I doing wrong?

It's not you, it's BYOND. It's BYOND repair.

Good to know, I had figured.

I do, and, with everything else, I cancel it.

So, how do I get around BYOND's shitness?

I think there is a webclient, but from memory that's even shittier.

It's likely just you need to update to the most recent stable version of BYOND, 509.whatever. Not many people going to be on around this time of night though.

I downloaded the latest version, 508.1319. And I figured as much, just wanted to check and make sure I remembered how to play before I fell over my own feet.

Do you mean 509.1319? That's the latest stable. Playing is more or less the same. I can't remember the last time you played with us, but if it was over two years ago, medical and engineering are going to be a lot different, as well as some aspects of science and mining. Antags are probably one of the things that have changed the most since then. There's also just a lot of little things that have changed since then that would be impossible to list because there's so many.

Yeah, 509, sorry. I guess I'll try restarting. Thanks for the mini-changelog!

Edit: It's not working. I tried reinstalling and a different server, but BYOND wasn't having it. Any other advice?

What OS are you using? It does make a difference. What's the exact message you get when you try to join?

I'm using Windows 10. I don't get any message, BYOND  just freezes, as do my other windows.

I doubt it's your computer, because BYOND isn't exactly a strenuous program to run, but I do remember reading about some issues with Windows 10. I'd recommend posting on either the BYOND forums or r/ss13 the space station 13 subreddit. It seems strange that BYOND would lock up like that, and the only thing I can think of is to try reinstalling, if you used the exe last time, maybe try the .zip? Or vice-versa? Or maybe someone else will have a solution when America wakes up. Sorry I couldn't help more!

That's a common problem with 509 versions. Had the same when I installed an updated instance.

Your BYOND is being frozen by your antivirus software, add it to exceptions.

Yeah if you're getting horrendous lag and practically almost BSODs then believe it or not it's not a virus, it's your AV blocking BYOND/Dream Daemon. I couldn't really believe it myself until it happened a few weeks ago when my AV suddenly decided it didn't like BYOND despite being on my exceptions list. For some odd reason there aren't many cases of that googling, I only found out when I thought of my AV and disabled it as a last resort and SS13 worked.
