I'd like to grab the smith then. No gender preference, call him/her Chelic.

Looking forward to it. Regardless of how chapter II actually did not even happen, I'm just going to call your new settlement chapter III in the history of Ghoullights. It will be called A New Beginning until something more appropriate comes up.

Late Summer, 1003

The stone walls never seemed so homely. Arcada had hated this place growing up; had defaced art as a kid, fallen into the moat as a teenager, and tripped over somebody's artifact sock as a young adult. Everyone here was stuffy and old and set in their ways. They adapted to the caves a long time ago, and didn't go outside. They did not even appreciate her talent with woodworking.

But she never imagined she would be kicked out. Sentenced to death in exile.
The Manager was apparently still talking.

"... You should think of it as a great honour!" he droned on; "Very few dwarves get to see the founding of a new settlement, and even fewer get to reclaim such great landmarks!"

Pah, landmark. She was being sent to found the New Ghoullights, now that the first one has been confirmed dead. Or, as the official record went, "Abandoned due to insufficient infrastructure; Note: possible minor undead infestation". This was a death sentence. Nobody came back from those cursed lands - as the tale went, once you saw the great river, you were not coming back.
Yes. They'd had enough of her here, and they were kicking her out. And there was nothing she could do about it.

The manager droned on for at least an hour, explaining just how lucky she really was. She stayed and listened, as the Hammerer's heavy hand rested on her shoulder.

"...And you are to embark immediately." the Manager finished.

What? No, that can't be right. Her things weren't ready...

"Here is your crew."

First was Vendix, Chief Mining Operator. Arcada knew Vendix in passing, and she was always a serious and trustworthy gal. What had she done to displease the Overseer?

Second came ... what was this? A squiggle?
Arcada snarked - "Hey Manager, did you have to drag your beard all over this document? I can't read this!"

He only smiled. "Oh no, not at all. This is one of your companions. He came by to sign independently."
Still grinning, the Manager walked to an engraving of cheese, looked around and yelled: "HEY YOU! COME OUT OF THAT CORNER AND INTRODUCE YOURSELF!"

An average dwarf with long, long straight hair jumped out as if startled, and bowed down to Arcada "My pleasure m'lady! I am your Specialist!"

Oh, that was just great. This dwarf had ages ago failed his fey mood due to lack of "slade" - some mystical stone he made up, and then demanded. He spent a long time running around babbling madly, but he had... calmed down.

Spoiler: InsanityIncarnate (click to show/hide)

Next on a list was a travelling skald from a foreign settlement. She apparently showed up a few months ago, following the tale of Ghoullights. Ever since then, she had been stuck in a legal limbo. Ghoullights did not exist anymore, and her Official Skald Papers had become null and void. It seems that the Overseer had finally found a way to get rid of her.

Spoiler: Mimosa, Skald (click to show/hide)

At least the next entry was better. Chelic, an amateur smith, had volunteered to join the expedition for a chance to earn a name for herself. In the Mountainhome, only one smith was allowed to practice at any given time, and the apprentices were left to find luck elsewhere. This was Chelic's bid for fortune.

Spoiler: Chelic, Quartermaster (click to show/hide)

The next one was fine too. Joe-Clark, cursed with an unusual name, was a controversial figure in the community. He was a very free-thinking architect, choosing qualities such as "efficiency" and "decreased lethality" in his designs. That was greatly scoffed upon, as his designs apparently did not represent the splendour of the dwarven race. He was mocked and called Human by other architect - and it seemed he had had enough. Even ghouls were better than those fools.

Last but not least was the brazen Bruva Thaddeus. A warrior soul, he was born with the squads already full. He was able to sneak away a few lessons with the sword, but his official designation was that of a doctor. He embraced both with dignity, and apparently had volunteered to come with the new Ghoullights expedition to increase survival chances. Well, that was something at least.

"Very well Arcada, it's time to go! Your wagon awaits!"

Yeah, she wouldn't even have had time to bring anything. But the hammerer prodded her forward with his +bronze warhammer+, reminding her of her position. Yeah, it was definitely a damn shame that nobody made clear glass boxes for their royal highness. Arcada still had no idea what it had to do with her, but it was too late to argue.

I embarked, and have a few more details to add. But it's 4:30am, so I'm going to collapse. I hope you all like your characters, and I will try to have the turn done by Thursday!

Fantastic! This is going to be great.

There's some minor errors, like how I, Chaosgear and Celic are all women (which is correct on my part, I think CG preferred male) but are referred to as "he". Or maybe it's intentional, not sure. I also asked for a different name, since this is a different character - but whatever, all that is completely understandable considering you were writing it almost until morning. On my turn, I kept messing up on pronouns and even my own dwarf's name even though I was writing it up in the afternoon. I don't think anyone will even mind if you leave it as is. Good job so far all in all.

I love having musical ability, too. Nice little touch.

Genders are hard at 4am, okay? :) Thanks for spotting, I completely missed it. Fixed now. [And my editor/writer girlfriend went over it and edited it]
EDIT: Just spotted the bit about the name. I'll retconn it  tomorrow.

The first day of the journey was ending, and Arcada was getting more resigned to her destiny by the minute. She would be the Expedition Leader, and by the Giant Toads, she would make the BEST DAMN EXPEDITION LEADER THERE IS! If they are heading into evil territory, well, she'll just have to survive that too.

While others busied themselves with evening duties, Arcada poured over the paperwork. Well, empty paper that she started scribing runes onto.

Okay. For a new Fortress, we need a miner. We got that in spades with Vendix. I will most definitely need help designing the place - that's up to Joe-Clark; I'll make the beds and basic necessities out of this lovely tower cap I was able to procure. Bruva Thaddeus can handle a sword, and is also prepared to teach the first ranks of militia. We have a smith and a few metal bars to work with. This is looking good. But... we don't have a mason...

She went around the camp, querying who was good with what--at least that was the idea. Before she could, Mimosa practically ran into her. "Expedition leader! I have prepared a report on our goods! We are so splendidly well off!"

Okay. "Most of this makes sense, I think, but why do we have a flute?"
"Oh!" Mimosa somehow pulled the item out of thin air "That is my personal request from the stocks! I am a musician of some renown, and this will help keep our spirits high!"

That can't be so bad. "Okay. I'll ignore that. Why do we have Cinnabar? We don't even have a mason."
"Ah you see", replied Mimosa wisely, "this was a personal request from Joe-Clark. He is a mechanic of great renown"
After a pause she added "...Also, I am somewhat of a mason. I didn't want it on the official forms, but it's something I do in my spare time. So I signed for it."

Arcada couldn't believe this "Personal requests? This space could have been taken up with valuable supplies! I need to investi... Wait.. don't tell me... you already know all about it, don't you"

"YES! Bruva Thaddeus got his medical supplies, Chelic requisitioned smithy gear and a toy hammer"

Arcada looked further down the list. "I'm afraid to ask... cheese? Who brings cheese on an expedition?"
"Oh, this is Insanity. Apparently he made it himself, and wanted it here."

"And... the bat blood?"
Mimosa shrugged. "You better ask him - he signed for it".

Last one. "And the cage?"

Hafling soured. "It's for the water buffalo. You... do know what happens in Ghoullights, right?"

Arcada didn't. And later she wished she still remained ignorant.

It was a long journey. Who knows how long it actually took, but it felt eternal. Mimosa continued to pester Arcada with endless "reports" on anything, sometimes with a musical score. It was... unbearable.

She did also query Insanity about the mysterious barrel of bat blood. Apparently, Insanity absolutely detested bats and brought this as a warning. Ugh, let's just hope blood cannot reanimate. She also found out that Insanity Incarnate was a cheesemaker, a wax worker, a soaper, a military instructor and something called "thread extractor". He apparently has never done it, or knew what it was (Well okay. He claimed it's a magical blue metal that is sealed deep in the earth in slade guarded by horrible demons. He's bonkers. You don't extract thread out of metals, and that blue metal doesn't exist) - but he figured he has a talent for it. What a character.

But they have arrived. Spring dawns, and the cursed river runs. It's time for the traditional proclamation...

Spoiler: Strike the earth! (click to show/hide)

A quick look around shows that the land is calm, and the river is full of carp, stingrays and milkfish.

Yeah, nobody's fishing anytime soon. Those fish are probably undead. The other undead must be hiding, waiting for them to go to sleep... Everyone, start digging!
And for their own sake... somebody get those buffalo in that cage and seal it underground. This is a mercy.
Or so she kept telling herself.

He may be insane by name and the fort's official madman, he may have brought along a barrel of bat blood and a bunch of completely useless and/or imaginary skills, but he sure can improvise a ballad that gets this girl's heart thumping.

Completely unlike our tone-deaf designated manager, my my. You would think her face will get stuck that way eventually. Maybe a little flute accompaniment will get her into the spirit of things.
