DF in Harper's
« on: February 19, 2013, 09:02:37 pm »

Not sure if anyone's posted this, but the O'Reilly DF guide was excerpted in Harper's Magazine's "Readings" in the March issue: http://harpers.org/archive/2013/03/high-low-high-low/

For someone not really familiar with Harpers... what exactly is this? Do they just grab a random chunk of text off the Internet and throw it down in a column without context?

I don't see any buildup to how any random reader is supposed to understand what the game is off of that.

The "Readings" include all sorts of short texts and excerpts of longer texts, sometimes Internet stuff, but also poetry, court transcripts, speeches, short fiction, government pamphlets, corporate memos...generally off-beat, amusing or poignant, and offered with minimal commentary.

It seems to me that the real joy of such an article would not be the actual article itself, but the reaction of people who first encounter the subject material, go "WTF??" and start making assumptions about it.

That seems like a crazy/unhelpful way to have a column.

Sans context, and hence, sans meaning, all you're looking at are an arrangement of words.

It kind of seems like some of the spambots that come through here sometimes - they just cut-and-paste chunks of text that look like a statement is being made if you don't actually read it, but when you do, you see that nothing makes sense.

The text in Harpers was posted by the author of the book.

Well, DF being modern art means nothing because, and I quote:
Because, and I quote:
Because, and I quote:
"Naruto has like a whole building in Japan, and DF just has one thing".

That was actully the response I got.

If stupid people weren't stupid, they would band together and kill us all.

So museums and newspapers arn't enough to get DF was off the ground, but eventuly some super popular Youtuber or something will hit DF on the head and everyone will start playing it. Until then, I'm just the random guy that isn't playing Call of Duty.

This won't ever happen. Everyone may know about DF at some time, but not everyone will play it.

One thing you have to say to them is Naruto is an anime you cant really interact with. Df is something you can DIRECTLY PUT FEEDBACK INTO IT TO SEE IMPROVEMENTS TO THE PLAY WORLD. Also Naruto doesn't have enough magma.

Furthermore I bet you if all the Bay 12'ers get together and ACTUALLY WORK TOGETHER we would rule the world, but in the end I figure we all die off building one of Thatauzzydwarf's mega projects in celebration of conquering the world.

That's technically an action, not a speech... Well it was only a matter of time before I had to write another scene of utter and horrifying perversion.

He's flipped over on his Betty Harper's and caught his can in the Bertie.

{Not Edited to Add:} I have no idea at what age a print magazine attains pretentiousness, but this one must be past that point.
