Votes are closed, I'll be updating in a couple of hours.

We shall be playing as the People's Front against The Secular Party.

Democracy 2 contains massive amounts of data, so I've updated the OP with screenshots from the game's tutorial.  I'll try to keep everyone updated on the most relevant stuff, but if you'd like to see more detailed data on any specific subject just let me know.

We'll be going with the default of four year election terms and a maximum of three terms.

As you can see, the main issues that we face at present are a skills shortage, pollution, street gangs, being a technological backwater, contagious disease, an asthma epidemic, hospital overcrowding, and homelessness.  We're spending slightly more than we have coming in, but this seems less important at present than the dire impressions that several groups have of us.

The majority of our population are socialists and fairly happy with the current state of affairs, but there is an unfortunate lack of true religious followers throughout Zambeezia and many of those few are feeling alienated by our lax gambling policies.

Our main problems lie with parents, the retired, liberals, and (sadly) the poor.  Homelessness is a fairly major issue for the latter two categories, and as such a possible priority for our Glorious Nation.  It seems that poverty and unemployment are the chief culprits at this moment in time.

Lowering (or even abolishing) our tobacco tax would help to lower the poverty level (while also pleasing the smokers), at the expense of lifespan and a portion of our own income.  We could also implement unemployment benefits (if there's a way to see the specific effects of new policies I can't find it, but it stands to reason that this would help with poverty.)

We could increase our military spending or agricultural subsidies (the latter seems more cost effective, although the former has some nice benefits like lowering terrorism), or even jack up import tariffs at the expense of international trade.

You may vote for up to two of the following options:

Increase military spending
Increase agricultural subsidies
Increase import tariffs
Lower/abolish tobacco tax
Implement unemployment benefits

To minimise the amount I need to keep track of, the degree to which I implement changes will reflect the amount of support a specific course of action gets.

E: Heh, I forgot to vote.  Mine go towards increasing agricultural subsidies and implementing unemployment benefits.

Increase agricultural subsidies. (I'm sure people aren't happy with not having food and it should create jobs. Maybe.)
Implement unemployment benefits. (Get that cash circulating.)

I should note that I've never played this, so I could be totally wrong. I feel like a real politician /easypotshot

I see one problem: None of the options reflect any sort of progress in fixing the literacy rates and/or fixing the economic downturn. And our military spending is bloated by a major degree, if not for the gangs, we could afford to cut down that spending. In my opinion, we should start building schools and incentivising small business. Both of those should start boosting the economy.

Why yes, I have played this already :P

You're sounding awfully secular, aren't you aware that our schools teach of darwinism as an equal theory to intelligent design?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

More seriously, I was thinking it'd be easier to try and tackle a few of the less daunting issues first.  Giving too many unrelated options all at once seems like it might overcomplicate things a bit, although I'm open to ideas if you can think of a better way to run this :)

Is this game worth the $20 on steam? I've kind of had my eye on it befrore but think 20 bucks may be a bit too much for something like this...

I'd say so, although you can get it here for a bit less.

-Increase military spending. (the USA is going to try to kill us at some point, I'm sure)

-Implement unemployment benefits.

Subsides and benefits.

I played this game before, but I always thought that it sucks that it takes same amount of political capital to change policy by 1% or by 100%. Is this fixed now somehow?
