Do statues block line of sight?
« on: February 19, 2013, 12:33:43 pm »

So, for my current fortress I want to have an archer's forest as part of my defense (checkerboard pattern of walls for my melee dwarves to engage archers). But rather than using boring old walls, I thought it would be cool to use a bunch of statues instead. Imagine the scene as the goblin archers creep through the room full of stone dwarves, only to have real dwarves burst forth and attack them! But before I waste a lot of time on this, does anyone know if statues block line of sight? I know they block movement like walls, but you can still dodge onto them, and I know they don't block liquid. So it's possible they don't block line of sight like a wall either.

Anyone know for certain either way?

AFAIK statues do not block line of sight.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Confirmed for adventure mode: they don't change your vision cone at all. And it seems you can shoot right through them, too.

They do block movement, however, yes?

If they do, you then have a fancy version of fortifications as long as you aren't facing building destroyers that can knock over the statues.

Or enemy archers, as fortifications, unlike statues, will stop incoming projectiles.

Dang, thats true.
I started thinking it might be a good idea, using statues, but only in terms of good for the dwarven moods (keeping them happy and such)

Well, I guess the compromise is to have a row of statues with a row of fortifications immediately behind them.  That way your marksdwarves get to admire fine statuary work while crossbolting goblins from (relative) safety. :D

That is a pretty good idea, I might start doing that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that also serve wonderfully as an adaption to the "Keep enemy archers from getting within 1 tile of the fortifications or they won't help you"-rule? I normally just use ditches to accomplish this, but statues would fill the same function I guess (and keep the dwarves on station a bit happier as a bonus)?

Perhaps use a combination, instead. It could be a hassle having to make so many statues per tile.

Hole -> Statue -> Fortification
Hole -> Window -> Statue

Take your pick for what you want your line of statues to achieve.

Also, a statue for every four or five tiles of trench would look better than a dense wall of statues. It would be less confusing to the eye, too, if you like to imagine the area.

So to recap, one minute everything was going just great, and the next we have caverns collapsing, firebreathing cave beasts, underground brush fires, a screaming swarm of poltergheists back for revenge, zombies in the corridors, drunken brawls in the dining halls, magma pouring into the caverns, rotting miasma everywhere, insanity, madness, and a flying crocodile heading right towards us!

True, that'd probably be easier to accomplish while at the same look more aesthetic.
