So Ive been giving Dwarf Fortress a try.
« on: February 17, 2013, 08:52:06 am »

Its save to say Im horrible at EVERYTHING the game intails. Ive been playing Adventure Mode, since Jef got me interested, but I have no idea how to do most of anything.

Since people used to talk a lot about DF on this forum, I was hoping so one could help me out.

Dwarf fortress adventure mode is very hard when starting out, the main thing to remember is to not get cocky, anything could kill you and I mean ANYTHING one slight moment of misjudgement and you're dead. Start out as a human (Not outsider) with demigod status and get as many companions as possible, look for Human/dwarf/elf Tree huger military units, by talking to them and asking them to join you, they will follow you to the death and will most likely be meat shields for your first few adventures. Use the help as much as possible. Also, avoid any uneven fights, two opponents can take you out in a second. The wiki is a great source of help use it often!

I have a human hero is that ok? I have a Copper Short sword and a copper sheild, over 200 fisher berries and a bowman and spearmen, is this a good group?

True enough about the killing part, I once was killed instantly by a horse to the face.

You wont need all those berries, and they are probably slowing your movement. You really want at least bronze/iron sharp weapons. Blunt weapons, material matters a lot less. I strongly reccomend armour as a high priority thing to find and wear - again, at least bronze or iron. As for companions, quantity is what to aim for. You wont get more than 3 or so until you start getting a name for yourself. Anyone is useful (be they prisoners, drunks, or soldiers), but ranged companions are very useful as arrows and bolts are deadly. Dont forget to loot the bodies of your companions for their gear when they die.

Peasant, Hero and Demigod effect your starting skill points and maximum number of followers. A good set of armour can save your ass in a tight spot, I believe iron is the best you'll find in your size (I may be wrong on that.) Copper is a relatively weak metal but isn't the worst
(FOR EDGED WEAPONS(Worst to best): Wood->Silver->Copper->iron/bronze->steel->!!HIDDEN METAL!!) Blunt weapons are different. In regards to companions... The more the merrier, more people = more bodies between you and a random crossbow bolt.

Make sure to make skirmishing moves when facing more than one enemy. Run away till only one can really catch up, wait a few ticks and swing for a leg, then dash away again. I try to disable most enemies this way till there's just one left to take out while his buddies are trying to crawl toward/away from me.

Always try to use trees as cover when facing arrows. Lacking trees, always have a shield and some dodge skill.

Learn to swim. Rivers are hard to cross if you're drowning.

Also. Severed heads make great blunt/thrown weapons.

Well, I have, like, twenty units of the stuff in my bag so I could...

But I don't trust that smirk of yours. What happens when I drink the blood?

Is it possible to be multiple night creatures at a time? I don't think it is, but.

You gain better speed as a reward for defeating the vampire.

Really? Alright, is it raised for good or does it wear off sooner or later?

For good, it's a one time thing though, the bonus doesn't stack.
