The Trader of Eisborg (suggestion game)
« on: February 15, 2013, 10:13:45 pm »

You awake to thin beams of light starting to filter through your frost covered windows. Stepping out of bed, you hear the aged wooden beams of your cabin creak loudly as the morning sun warms the structure. As you light your pipe, you  look over your simple leather ledger which contains a lithographed calender and a few blank pages beyond that. It's March first, 1889, the first day of spring.

Your stomach is aching from a lack of food - winter has been harsh in these alpine mountains. You have a meager breakfast of boiled oats with a little bit of jerky. It's time to go back to town and get back to trading. You have a single skinny cow and a cart out back. It's time to look around and see what you have around and make a decision of what you want to take to Eisborg to trade.

Oh, you almost forget.  You pull out a small wad of cash from a small cigar box underneath your bed - three krona (abbreviated K3). This won't buy much.. it won't even buy enough oats for a few weeks of meals.

You take a final puff on your pipe and then tap the ashes out. As you step outside, you are greeted by a beautiful meadow full of flowers under a bright sun. Eisborg is several hours journey by oxcart from here - what'll you be doing today?

Bring the gun and the bullets. That's it. Trade the townspeople their stuff for them to keep their life.

This works.
Let's also sell the tobacco to help pay for bait.

There's a winding path through the grass down to the town of Eisborg . It takes a few hours to get down to the road, and then a quick journey into the town. There's a small market in the center, where there's a decent crowd , and a few buildings which serve as permanent stores. The major stores of note - two general goods stores, a clothing/shoe store, and a gunsmith. There's also a blacksmith and animal doctor who work out of wagons at the far edge of the market.

As you push your way into the crowd, you pull out your bag of tobacco and start shouting. "Good pipe tobacco! 1 kilo, for sale!"  It takes you very little time to find a good price for your tobacco - it's always in high demand. Within ten minutes, you sell it for 10 krona to a portly man in a red coat. He's probably a man of office ,but before you can chat to him he disappears back into the crowd.

You keep wandering around and find a person selling animal traps. The following traps are available :
snare - 1 krona - 5 available (for squirrels/rabbits)
small spring trap - 5 krona (for foxes/beavers/etc)
medium spring trap - 10 krona (for wolves/small deer/etc)
bait - 1 krona per kg ( 1 kg is sufficient for 1 week of trapping on any type of trap )

You purchase two spring traps and enough bait to get you through the week. Normally, you would spend any leftover krona on beers at the local tavern, but you're absolutely penniless at this point. You start heading towards the edge of town, and spot a former schoolmate, a man named Ribalt.

He's a massive man with a long, dark black beard and long, curly black hair. His nose is enormous, and his skin mottled in appearance. The children of the village call him "Troll", and sometimes go running and screaming when they see them. You're not sure whether it's for play or a serious reaction. He comes over to you and greets you warmly.

"Say, friend. You're carrying those traps, undoubtedly up to your cabin... let me tell you something. No! Don't turn away, seriously friend. Many of the animals have been flushed from traditional common lands, and now are in ... other places. How about... I go to a place with you, we set the traps, and then share the rewards?"

It's hard for you not to frown. He's tried this scheme before, he'll probably want to take you to the Burgomeister's own backyard.
Trapping on that land is illegal - but you really need to think out your options. You've never been empty of coin before when he came to you with one of his schemes.

You respond quickly, "Let me guess. The lands are somewhere near your own cabin, but actually on the lands of the state."
He grins sheepishly and exposes his yellow, jagged teeth. "I say, uh, it's not quite on state land. I think you'd have to get a surveyor to tell you for sure. But, I think, just for a few weeks, it'll be, uh.. okay. Yeah? We both need the krona before the end of spring! "

You bite your lip momentarily and ponder your options.

If you trap on Ribalt's location, you'll have to give up a share of your pelts and if you get caught, you'll likely be thrown in jail.
If you trap in the common lands near the village, you'll risk your traps getting stolen by other hunters.
If you trap near your house, the animals aren't as prolific there

(Choose a location to trap, and you'll spend 1 week trapping there, or talk to Ribalt further)
