It's best to avoid unnecessary conflicts if possible. However, if you fail to prevent the situation from escalating to the point where violence is necessary, then you must act.

If someone strikes you, strike back. If someone is going to strike you, then strike first. If someone is determined to kill you, them kill them. By refusing to defend yourself you relinquish control of the situation and your life to your assailant. People who refuse to defend themselves show a lack of dignity and invite further abuse.

Violence is a necessity. It is neither good or evil. Fear and violence are what allow societies to exist.

Problem with fear tactics is that it causes people to be hostile to you, and hell knows what they'll do if they have a knife, next time...

Pull out a gun and end the threat.

Trust me on this: one of the only things that can prevent revenge being exacted is fear.

No it's not! There are loads of fucked up places where people constantly exact revenge on each other, and it's been going on so long that everyone thinks THEY'RE the victim and their violence is justified. While I agree with a lot of the non-pacifists here, this was just a load of bs :P

I suppose Gamerlord would argue there wasn't enough fear being applied in this case.

And he'd be wrong. If beheadings, tortures and wedding massacres don't strike fear, then what does? Dressing up as a bat and striking from the shadows with high-tech gadgets?

I suppose you could go all out and just kill them all. No one will hold a grudge.

To quote Dr. Strangelove: "Detterence, is the art of producing, in the mind of the enemy, the fear to attack".

Therefore you should have a flamethrower strapped to your back at all times. You will never, ever, ever, be attacked. Unless they don't see it.

Easy way to fix that. Wear a flamethrower, and a hat with a sign on it that has an arrow downwards and the words 'flamethrower that way'.

To those who argue that violence only begets more violence, consider this; verbal and emotional assault perpetuates itself as well. Think of how a single inflammatory comment can ruin an entire discussion. Trolls ruin everything, after all.

Getting some great (and not so great) input. Keep it up. There seems to be a lot of mentally (not to mention physically) weak sadsacks that fear physical harm

Also, whenever you use terms like "good" and evil" to describe an action, it just makes your argument much more childish.

Seems our host has come back to stoke the fire. Don’t think I hadn’t noticed how the eyes in that painting move after you leave the room, and I heard your stifled laughter issuing from it.

Murder victims didn't fight enough. Rape victims didn't run fast enough. Broken, broken logic.

They are what threaten their existence to begin with.

And continue the suffering.

No strawman present.

I do hope you never reach the point where you hurt someone because they have wronged you.
