Aliens: Colonial Marines
« on: February 13, 2013, 10:21:00 pm »

Well. Apparently there isn't a topic for this yet, so I'm making one, in case anyone else wants to talk about this game.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is a new game, released the 12th of February 2013, in which the player is a Colonial Marine by the name of Winter. (I don't remember the first name.) The plot start basically is that the USCM Sephora picked up the Sulaco's distress signal and has arrived over LV-426 to provide assistance. Over LV-426, they find a derelict Sulaco, which was last sighted over Fury 161, and empty of crew.
I can give no further information without spoiling anything, but I had a pretty good opinion of this game. It wasn't amazing or really fantastic, but it was a fun Aliens game. The Marines felt a little bit too badass compared to the Aliens, and there wasn't much horror to it, even when the Facehuggers were concerned, but all in all it was a good game, I think. I didn't like the multiplayer Alien controls at all. They are clunky and inefficient. I much preferred AvP's Alien controls, they were far more fluid.

Last time I checked, it's getting BASHED to death by reviewers and angry mob of people who want refunds.

I really don't know what to make of that.
One thing I know for sure is that the demo video had stuff that is not on the game itself, in other words, false marketing.
MASSIVE false marketing.

Yeah, I just love Aliens games. I've become used to the shite they drop out most of the time, but I try to keep it in perspective. They just want money. >.<

To be fair, the game itself is not THAT horrific(still very bad), but the problem is that they held review embargo.
No previews, no reviews, no youtube spot-ons, no nothing at all until few hours after the game was released.
It's like they knew it's going to suck, and decided to milk every last bit of penny out of it before it went in a hole and died.

That combined with fabricated demo video it looks pretty darn bad.

I don't really have any rage about it. I had fun with it. I'll have more fun with it. I didn't have to buy it. I like the gun customization, except I wanted to put ALL the attachments on my gun dammit!

There's been a single great game out of the Aliens franchise. That's the original Aliens Versus Predator on the PC. A decent game was the follow up Alien versus Predator 2. How could anyone expect anything moderate with the two death-jaws that are Sega and Gearbox on the box?  :-\

I think the most hilarious thing was the game is 120 USD in my region (including season pass). one-hundred-and-twenty fucking dollars. Personally it's coming to the point where I almost feel like whoever pre-ordered that game for that amount without any kind of demo or pre-reviews deserves to be taken for a ride. There's consumer-neglect and then there's just flat out stupidity.

The original AvP for PC is damn hard. Very good game. I own it. I want AvP2 actually.

Customer base getting suckered by ridiculous day one DLC.
Publishers take advantage.

Problem is the customer base. Publishers simply capitalise on their tendency to rush into buying overhyped games.

And CatLolCat, don't bother with regional pricing. Go for sites that don't do that practice like OZGameShops. :)

My feelings pretty much.  I'm quite angry that this game is apparently this bad, since I've been waiting years for it.  I wanted a decent game about the marines and aliens without predators.  One that had nice tie ins to the movies and shoutouts to the fans.  Exactly what this game was supposed to be.

Then they make it bad.

I'm not holding my breath on the Aliens franchise getting better any time soon, honestly.

Now if only the old AVP would play on this computer.  :(

Oh I do. But with Steam basically being the centre of PC gaming it is a bit silly to see such insane prices. I would really love Valve to start forcing fair regional pricing like the Apple store does, they certainly own enough of the market to do so.
It's also the first time I've heard CatLolCat, I rather enjoy it.  :)

I have AvP running fine on Windows 7. I'm not sure if it runs on Windows 8 at all. If you do manage to get it working I recommend this mod.

It's my graphics drivers that are the culprit.  It used to work (Vista and 7), then I updated a few dozen times and tried it again one day and no dice.  I don't want to have to figure out what it'll take to get it running again.   :-\

On the topic of the game itself though... I'm just sorely disappointed in so many aspects of it.  It's like they went through the trouble to hype it up as the Aliens nerd fest of the century, then change and add little things that irritate that side of me to no end.  The new alien castes and changing up the weapons are some examples of that.

I could probably look past that, but with a <6 hour campaign with mediocre quality, I'm just not bothering.

I am dissapointed at the lack of an Alien campaign (though if there was one it probably would have been about 3 hours long anyway).

I also read from reviews that this game mainly consists of mowing down aliens in large quantities, it sounds like it would lack that horror that the original games had (ping... ping... ping... ping-ping-ping *hides in corner*).

For $80... no. Just no. Maby for $5.

Well from all the LPs and glitch videos [and boy are there a ton] this seems like one of the worst FPSes since Daikatana, but I might be spoiled by [being forced to] play things like Half Life 2 EP1, Escape from Butcher's Bay and Serious Sam, since nothing newer than that runs on my laptop.

Even at the best possible case it's a mediocre game with some horrible texture work and animations, which is in no way even remotely relatable to the time it took to make it.

You could possibly have fun in coop? If you and your friends are the type of guys who like to play bad games drunk and laugh a lot? I know I am, but it won't run, so even that joy is denied me.

Also I saw a video of a guy doing the first level pacifist style - running onward everytime he saw an alien and letting his AI team do the work.
