Later on in the game, are you going to extend this to planes?

Yep. I have a series of objectives for space planes including simple jet plane tests all the way up to SSTO designs and space planes which can reach various other planets and return.

R&D breakthrough for this turn: Several more control surfaces have been adapted for rocket use, and the labs have developed an efficient if somewhat power hungry way to eliminate CO2 in the command capsule! This little device scrubs CO2 out of the command pod's atmosphere and vents it out of the ship to keep the atmosphere inside nontoxic. They're working on a way to 'recondition' the air, whatever that means, but this is an important step to living longer in space!

Hehe, this save is pretty fun. I replaced the outside engines on Helios III with the vectoring variety, which gave it enough control to reach 120km, though it's too inefficient to ever get close to an orbit. Helios II, on the other hand, can get to orbit and back easily just by swapping the staging around and burning intelligently.
