Bay12 Jam Session #1: Three, two, one, let's jam!
« on: February 12, 2013, 10:53:01 pm »

Interest check for a forum collaborative music project, uh, thing.  In which the first person on the list for a given project would record a track, upload it, and give the next person the link, who would then download it, play along and record a second track, save it, upload it, send it to musician number three, and so on.
If you want to sign up for the first, mostly experimental, project, you will need a few things.  Namely, an instrument, the ability to play it, a means of recording it, and music recording software.  The actual quality of those things listed doesn't matter; I don't care if all you have is a plastic recorder and the ability to play "Hot Cross Buns", with a laptop microphone and GarageBand - the goal here isn't to make a studio-quality recording, it's to have a (hopefully) fun and unique jam session with people of all experience levels and from all over the world.
To sign up all you need to do is post to say you're interested, what instrument you will play and your experience with it, and how you'll be recording.  If there are multiples of any given instrument, the first poster will get the position - hopefully we'll end up with a wide range of instruments represented.  For at least the first project, singers won't be accepted - that might change in the future if there's enough interest.
So, who's in?

Current project:
Glloyd (Keyboard) DONE
Willfor (Glockenspiel) DONE
inEQUALITY (Trombone) <-
GlyphGryph (Acoustic Guitar)
DarkWolfXV (Electric Guitar)
frostshotgg (Alto Saxophone)
anzki4 (Harmonica)
Barbarossa TSG (Euphonium)
Remalle (Bass Guitar)

I'd like to IN but I'm not sure you'll get much more from me than noise.

Instrument: Guitar (Electric)
Role: Backing, Rhythm, Noise
Experience: Very little
Recording: I have no idea (although I could probably use the Rocksmith RealTone cable to some effect.)

I'd be so down.

Instrument: Guitar (acoustic or electric), piano, ukulele, banjo, organ.
Role: Whatever really.
Experience: Ten years of piano, 8 of guitar, 3 of ukulele, 2 of banjo, and 5 years playing in bands.
Recording: Probably for this I'd use my Logitech USB Producer Mic, and record it through Pro Tools.

Oh sweet, there's actually interest in this.  MaximumZero, you posted first so you get to go first, unless you want to swap positions with someone.  I'll be playing bass (one year, Garageband, crappy laptop microphone) in last position.  Max, once you're done, turn the track into an mp3 and send it to Glloyd, ok?
Also if anybody else is interested for project number one, feel free to jump in.

You have a resume that I am very jelly of, professorlamp.

Since both acoustic and electric guitar look to be taken possibilities, I'm going to go full local hipster:

Instrument: 2 Octave Glockenspiel
Experience: Basic music theory knowledge, a technical degree in audio engineering, 3 months post-school experience recording,
Glockenspiel experience: One night busking in front of bar with three other dudes in the middle of last February until said bar closed.
Recording: TASCAM 1800 -> Protools

Kidding though, PTWL.

I'll see if I can hack something together, but please realize that I have no idea what I'm doing. If I don't post anything within the next couple of days, please skip me, and I'll get to it when I get to it.

I can either record my Euphonium or generate some bleeps and bloops. (Or both, if desired.)

Instrument: Euphonium
Role: Rhythm, melody, anything I need to do.
Experience: 8 years, though I haven't been playing much the past few months. (I might be a bit rusty.)

Instrument: WAV files via C
Role: I can make some sweet rhythms and whatnot, but it'll sound very synthetic. Because it is.
Experience: Six months of audio engineering classes, knowledge of C.

Recording: I have a terrible paper-towel-roll-and-a-wire microphone, or I might be able to borrow a friend's. If using my digital stuff, the microphone becomes unnecessary.

You said no singers, but you didn't say no vocalists at all; how about a screamer/'harsh vocalist'? I kid, I kid.  :P

No, but seriously, this experiment is probably well out of the field of what I do (unless someone wants to include a trombonist... not sure I'd be in for that though), so I'm just posting to watch.  :D

I might could try, but it's not like I have more than a few years of experience under my belt, so... eh, if a Trombone is wanted, I'm so in. Just PM me to get my attention once this thing gets rolling, I tend to get distracted from things easily.

Instrument: Trombone (and if you ever want to get really out there, I've been brushing up on my 'harsh vocals' for a few years now  :P)
Role: Bass, Rhythm, Melody, doesn't matter. (I have a rotory-f trigger on my trombone, so I can theoretically hit some pretty crazy low notes, but my low range is actually pretty terrible so I prefer to stay on or above the staff for whatever's needed, until I improve.)
Experience: Three years of concert band in school concurrent with two years of playing in a jazz band, currently/more recently been playing for a few months in a small church ensemble.
Recording: I REALLY don't know. Unless I can borrow some equipment from someone I know, the best I really have is the USB mic that comes with Rock Band... xD

My new(ish) Euphonium has a fourth valve, which means I can cover some insanely low notes. (Lowest one I can hit is somewhere around 30 Hz.)

Someone else can have my turn, and I'll go later, unless you just want me to lay down a quick rhythm to get this party started.

@Remalle

Are we expected to lay down a track for the whole song or just a short segment? I'm assuming the first person to post a file will practically have to write the song and then the rest just fill in where necessary?
