The Ethics of Eating Animals
« on: February 12, 2013, 01:53:52 pm »

In order to not continue spamming the 52 book challenge thread I shall continue this derail here.

Well, you could actually move out of the country as soon as you can. Also you are not the one torturing animals, the workers there are. Which means that if by your standards you are free from what your ancestors did to native Americans, you are also free of the torturing animals part.

There's a difference between profiting from something created by suffering and not creating more suffering in the future. If people continue to buy animal products in such a large scale without caring how it's produced then nothing will change. If I moved out of Canada the aboriginal people wouldn't retroactively have been treated better by my ancestors. If I stop eating meat then that's one less person who's actively supporting an industry the causes needless suffering.

And before anyone says that one person is a drop in the bucket, please compare that statement to early woman's suffrage or abolition movements. If the only time you're willing to make a stand is when the battle's already won then you're not making a moral decision, you're just going with the crowd.

Humans have a compulsion towards meat eating that isn't likely to be broken. We're very close to developing viable vat-grown meat, and that should be our focus. Getting people to change their behavior is almost impossible, changing the consequences of that behavior is much easier.

That said, laws against factory farming will go a long way.

Life is consumptive. Even without eating animals, you eat something and it ceases to exist in the same form. It may not have sentience, not that we can prove anyways, but something is still destroyed/transform to prolong existence.

So I don't see an issue with it. To me, it's how the universe is wired. As soon as someone can come up with a way that we can derive energy from sources without destroying said source of energy.....I'll reorder my paradigm. But it's pretty much a fundamental tenet of reality to me.

Note: my argument is completely separate from sustainability. That's a real issue we can tackle, more than we can whether or not it's "Ok" to eat animals.

I have no idea what I'd do if I lived in those worlds where ALL animals are entirely sentient.

It would drive me crazy.

Eating animals isn't wrong in general, but I still don't do it because the way animals are raised for meat is unnecessarily cruel (what MSH said about factory farming) and I don't want to support it.

You misspelled seance.  Are possessing Draignean?  Are you actually a ghost in the shell? You have to tell us if you are, that's the rule

I'm kind of on the side that says you shouldn't eat animals.

I've never really liked the distinction of sentience, because its a tricky thing to define and make meaningful.  I'd argue that no animal with a functioning brain wants to be eaten or killed, regardless of how smart it is.  So it does seem cruel to me that we eat other animals and raise them to be eaten.

Yet I eat meat anyway, because it doesn't seem to bother me enough to change my habits.  Deep down I know I'm probably a terrible person for it.   :P  I have mad respect for vegetarians in general though.

Vegetarian for moral reasons, here. Pretty much agree with MSH that vat grown meat is the wave of the future (currently) that will solve 99.999% of the problems here.

Life is consumptive. Even without eating animals, you eat something and it ceases to exist in the same form. It may not have sentience, not that we can prove anyways, but something is still destroyed/transform to prolong existence.

Your argument supports cannibalism just as much as eating animals. (also note that most animals are sentient, but not "sapient," which is a very very vague term)

In vitro meat, as Wikipedia seems to call it, is something I'd probably support. Mostly because of environmental and awesome-name reasons, but less animal cruelty and yes more meat doesn't seem like a bad idea...

I respect vegetarians and their goals, but unfortunately I am far too evil to not eat meat. :(

I'm against battery farming - you'd have to be crazy not to be in my opinion - but I still buy cheapish meat that probably comes from those places. When I actually have a career and can afford free range things that'll change.

In vitro meat would be weird as hell, but I'd definitely prefer it over animal - murdered meat.

My rule is that I won't eat anything that convinces me I shouldn't eat it. Trite as it sounds, it's the only moral standard that absolutely everyone holds to.
