Shocking. But considering they already have total control over the election, who are they trying to convince?

they are in a theocracy, after all.

Has the election ever been openly bought? The catholic church seems to have a shitload of money.
Ever heard of the Borgias? Yeah...two of them were Popes, and nearly a third as well. Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia) was made a cardinal by his uncle, Pope Callixtus III (Alfons de Borja), while having mistresses galore and at least half a dozen kids (one of which, Cesare, almost became Pope himself).

Pimpin' is Popin'.

EDIT: Also worth noting:
Quote from: Wikipedia
On the death of Pope Innocent VIII on 25 July 1492, the three likely candidates for the Papacy were cardinals Borgia, seen as an independent candidate, Ascanio Sforza for the Milanese, and Giuliano della Rovere seen as a pro-French candidate. It was rumoured but not substantiated that Borgia succeeded in buying the largest number of votes and Sforza, in particular, was bribed with four mule-loads of silver.[8] This was portrayed in the Showtime TV series The Borgias (2011) but is a popular falsehood about Pope Alexander. Mallett shows that Borgia was in the lead from the start and that the rumours of simony began after the election with the distribution of benefices, and that Sforza and della Rovere were just as willing and able to bribe as anyone else.[9] The benefices and offices granted Sforza, moreover, would be worth considerably more than four mule-loads of silver. Johann Burchard, the conclave's master of ceremonies and a leading figure of the papal household under several popes, recorded in his diary that the 1492 conclave was a particularly expensive campaign. Della Rovere was bankrolled to the cost of 200,000 gold ducats by King Charles VIII of France, with another 100,000 supplied by the Republic of Genoa.[10] Borgia was elected on 11 August 1492, assuming the name of Alexander VI (due to confusion about the status of Pope Alexander V elected by the Council of Pisa).

And keep in mind, that's 300,000 ducats that went into the LOSER'S campaign. Makes you wonder how much gold the Borgias spent.

You know, since we are on the topic of papal elections sheanigans: there were certain rumors concerning a pope and a certain very wealthy organization which might or might not have massively funded his campaign but certainly got special priviledges after  he won and I'm not saying anything more

Does the Papal Resignation have something to do with secret Illuminati antimatter bombs?

I'm not about to spout Da Vinci code nonsense. I'm walking the line on some of the Vatican's politics which aren't really that secret, but since I don't know who's reading this exactly I dont want to hurt anyone's sensitivities.

Without getting onto those, I can ellaborate on some of the few crazy priviledges that the Church as a whole (as in, non-faction-specific, which is what I was referring above) gets in certain parts of the world, and how they abuse them, if you insist. But really, I don't want to get into politics, I really don't, which I why I was being ambiguous above. If you really think they deserve all the freebies they get, it's your business.

Oh, you mean Opus Dei.

I don't know who or what you're so afraid of offending. Everybody knows Catholic Church officials use their sway in developing nations to pressure people into giving them sex and money. The corruption is blatant and on the surface, it's no secret.

Only if "secret Illuminati antimatter bombs" is coded language for "shitload of priests who have a thing for 'ministering' to young boys".  :-\

Why'd you even bring it up then?  You can just leave a nugget like that and expect nobody to want more.

Politics are fair game I think, the Catholic church is as much of (if not more) a political organization as a religious one.  The Vatican is a nation, and they do apparently have quite a lot of influence on the Italian government as well.

Quite a few times actually. (But no more than any other elections). The wealth of the Vatican is however not the result of these practices, but of the taxes they used to get, and of course the Death hand*(Ie, the moment anyone joins a religious order, they agree that all their wealth and belongings go to the Church).

Also, there have been rumours that we'd get a black pope this time.
